The 23rd Annual Sarasota Film Festival (SFF) began on April 30, 2021 and took place both in person and virtually. A staple in both Sarasota and the film community, the festival draws over 50,000 patrons, who gather to celebrate the best in cinema. It is a favored destination for filmmakers, national press, industry executives and stars.
In addition to the Film Festival, a student-made, short-film competition was open to students ages 18 and under. SFF celebrates the accomplishments of young filmmakers by providing them an opportunity to showcase their work at the 10-day major international film festival. According to STC Digital Video Technology Student Evelyn Kroeger, "Digital Video Technology really allowed us to express our creativity and it inspired my love of filmmaking!" Evelyn plans to continue her career path to filmmaking, stating, "Mr. Gray is a wonderful teacher and I can't wait to continue my STC career with Mr. Fagan next year."
On Wednesday, May 5, students, families and the general public were invited to attend a Hollywood-style premiere of the student films, complete with a red carpet and awards ceremony. The 2021 SFF's Hollywood Nights Student Festival, Best Film Award went to "Double Damsels", created by Suncoast Technical College Students. Rheniah Toledo, STC DVT Student Film Maker said, "I've been granted and blessed with new opportunities from this program and Mr. Gray has helped me to excel further than I could have ever imagined." Rheniah went on to to state that, "Even with the past struggles we have faced, we've continued to explore and create stories for others to enjoy."
Congratulations to STC's Digital Video Technology Students Evelyn Kroeger and Rheniah Toledo (Shown in photo above) who won the competition for their film, Double-Damsels.
