judges needed

Dear Community Members,

The 2026 Sarasota County History Day Contest will take place on Saturday, February 28 at the Selby Public Library. Using this year theme of Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History, Sarasota County students created websites, performances, exhibits, historical papers, and documentaries about various topics in history. The county contest is the preliminary opportunity for students to share their research and compete for a chance to participate at the Florida History Day Contest and the national level of the competition.

National History Day (NHD) is an opportunity that elevates research and writing skills, nurtures creative expression, offers opportunities for alternative assessment, enriches the curriculum, and helps students find their voice as young historians. Implemented internationally for over 50 years, NHD is an experience that inspires confidence and prepares students for the world beyond their secondary education. These priceless interactions and experiences set precedents for future academic endeavors.

We are looking for people willing to volunteer their time to judge this year’s academic competition. You do not need a background in history. A variety of expertise is valued and appreciated. Judges receive some materials in advance to become familiar with the evaluation materials and begin reviewing the projects. All judges receive training the morning of the event, and breakfast and lunch are provided. The only requirement is you are approved as a Level I Volunteer through the Community Involvement Portal (click here) for Sarasota County Schools. You must register for approval by February 6.

If you have judged before, we hope you will return to support Sarasota County Schools’ scholars. If you are new to the experience, we hope you will consider volunteering your time at this one-day event. Attached is a description of this year’s National History Day theme for your information. Additionally, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in learning more about the event and commitment.
