Suncoast Technical College students building Tiny House to help prepare for workforce

SARASOTA COUNTY – Students at Suncoast Technical College are working together to build a house in a collaborative effort.

While they usually work with Habitat for Humanity during the school year, that has not been an option due to the pandemic. Instructors decided it would be beneficial to allow students to experience constructing a house from start to finish and gain even more skills before entering the workforce. Each program has contributed something different, including building and construction, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drafting, and more.

The tiny house is currently at the Sarasota Branch where the Plumbing and HVAC programs are completing their installations, including a composting toilet. After they are completed, the house will be transported to the North Port Branch for the final touches by the Carpentry program. The house will then be toured around the area to job fairs, schools, and parades.

“We’re planning on adding clear panels so the community can actually see the wiring, plumbing and other components that make up the house” said Margie DeMauro, the Industrial Programs Outreach Specialist.

With so many hands on deck, there is no doubt that this house will be completed quickly with all of these talented individuals coming together for one cause. This project is sponsored by Career Edge, the Eppard Foundation, PGT Custom Windows + Doors and Alvin J. Singleton Roofing.
