Riverview Men’s Basketball Coach to Take Post at Florida Gulf Coast University

SARASOTA COUNTY, June 6, 2019 – William “BJ” Ivey, the current head men’s basketball coach at Riverview High School has resigned his position and accepted a job with the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) where he will serve as director of basketball operations for the men’s basketball team. FGCU officially announced Mr. Ivey’s new post on June 4. Mr. Ivey, a former Sarasota County Schools Teacher of the Year, has been with Riverview High School for 14 years and has been recognized by former Florida Governor, Rick Scott, with a Shine Award and was named the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Class 8A Coach of the Year in 2016.

“We are delighted for BJ,” commented Erin del Castillo, principal at Riverview High School. “He is a beloved teacher and coach and has inspired thousands of students over the years to succeed both on and off the court. Florida Gulf Coast University is fortunate to have such a dedicated professional on their team.”

“My time with Sarasota County Schools has given me the opportunity to learn and grow and prepare me for this next step in my career,” noted BJ Ivey. “I have loved teaching and mentoring students at Riverview High School and have had the honor of coaching outstanding young men and women during my tenure. I am excited for this new opportunity and look forward to continuing to learn and grow at Florida Gulf Coast University.”

Mr. Ivey earned a bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and a master's degree in education curriculum and instruction from National Louis University in Tampa. He and his family currently reside in Sarasota.

Riverview High School will soon announce a new head basketball coach for the 2019-20 school year.
