Riverview High School Celebrates Success of Excellence & Equity Initiative’s Inaugural Year

SARASOTA COUNTY, May 15, 2019 – Riverview High School is pleased to announce that in its first year, the Excellence & Equity Initiative (E2) has enabled all 27 senior participants to attend the colleges or universities of their choice this fall. Collectively, the students have initially accepted over $3.4 million in scholarship funds, equating to an average scholarship award of $127,208.59 per student. This does not include any community scholarships students may be awarded over the next several months.

The E2 Initiative seeks to promote the inclusion and success of underrepresented students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) and International Baccalaureate Career-related Program (IBCP). Here are a few quick facts about the first 27 Riverview seniors that participated in E2:

  • All qualified for free and reduced lunch
  • 60% identify themselves as a minority
  • 74% will be a first-generation college attendee
  • All will be attending college in fall 2019

“This is a tremendous achievement,” noted Todd Bowden, superintendent of Sarasota County Schools. “We could not be more proud of the effort put forth by these students and their teachers. Our deepest gratitude to the community, organizations and individuals that helped this initiative get off to a strong start this year. We look forward to seeing the impact of the E2 Initiative as these students excel in higher education.”

“All students should have access to opportunities to advance their education,” commented Steve Cantees, executive director of Secondary Schools at Sarasota County Schools. “The IBDP and IBCP are extremely rigorous but yield equally powerful results for those that participate. Riverview High School’s E2 Initiative is a shining example of the district’s mission to break down barriers and inspire students to take their academic and civic development to the next level. Congratulations to all on a job well done.”

“We are so proud of this talented group of students,” said Erin del Castillo, principal of Riverview High School. “The collective effort and diligence of all the students and teachers involved with the IBDP and IBCP is truly impressive. Our inaugural E2 seniors will undoubtedly make a tangible impact on the world. We look forward to celebrating their continued success, and cannot wait to see how this initiative will open countless doors for even more students in the years to come. Our thanks to community partners, like the Rotary Club of Sarasota Bay Foundation, for their support.”
