March 16 – Important Updates from Sarasota County Schools

March 16, 2020 -- 7:00 PM

Good evening all,

We hope everyone has enjoyed their first day of Spring Break so far! We wanted to share a few important points of information based on feedback we’ve been receiving from families and employees.

Meals for Students

During the week of Spring Break (March 16—March 20), we encourage any families looking for meal support to reach out to local food banks and food pantries. Please visit All Faiths Food Banks’ Food Distribution Schedules on their website for location information.

Any/all children 18 or under will be provided meals starting on Monday, March 23. The meal service will run Monday thru Friday each week until schools reopen. The following locations will be open for drive-thru meal service:

  • Booker High School – 3201 North Orange Avenue
  • Fruitville Elementary School – 601 Honore Avenue
  • Garden Elementary School -700 Center Road, Venice
  • North Port High School – 6400 West Price Blvd, North Port
  • Atwater Elementary School – 4701 Huntsville Ave, North Port

Parents and guardians can pick up a meal for their child from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM during the day. Children must be in the car for staff to verify in order for parents and guardians to receive a meal. The meals will consist of a lunch, as well as a breakfast for the next morning. Parents and guardians should follow the signs when entering each of the school campuses.

Our Food & Nutrition Services department will attempt to accommodate a child's allergens – parents and guardians will need to email Kristen.Pulfer@sarasotacountyschools.net with allergen considerations, school location for pick up, and approximate time of pick up.

Instructional Continuity Plan

A team of 15 district and school leaders are meeting tomorrow to further develop our Instructional Continuity Plan that will help us ensure that our children can continue to progress academically during school closures. This plan may include both online learning opportunities for older children, and paper-based resources for our younger children. The team will also further develop a resource guide with ideas for families to support their child's learning. We will share both documents with school leaders and teachers for further development prior to sharing with families.

Mobile Device Needs Survey

Reminder! We are still asking parents & guardians of traditional public school students to complete a brief online survey. The survey can be found by going to www.sarasotacountyschools.net/deviceneedssurvey. It is important that we gather this information for our teachers NOW so they can continue to provide instruction virtually if school closures occur for an extended period of time. If you can’t access the survey, please contact the district’s Information Technology department at 941-927-9000, ext. 31350.

Update about Standardized Testing

We have been notified by the Department of Education that all standardized testing will be pushed back two weeks.

Superintendent Search

Based on updated guidelines from the CDC issued yesterday evening – gatherings and events with expected attendance of at least 50 people should be canceled or postponed for eight weeks – the school district has decided to postpone all in-person Community Forums and Staff Forums that were previously scheduled. We encourage everyone to continue to utilize the online survey to submit feedback, if you haven’t done so already. Please keep checking www.sarasotacountyschools.net/superintendentsearch for any further updates or changes.

The school district will be communicating updates with families and employees as new information becomes available to us. Thank you for your patience and resilience during this unprecedented time – please continue to practice good health habits such as social distancing and frequent hand washing. Thank you!
