March 12 – Important Information from Sarasota County Schools

March 12, 2020 -- 7:00 PM

Good evening all,

We wanted to share several important reminders as Spring Break officially starts for Sarasota County families. Please understand the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has created an evolving situation with the potential for updated advisories daily.

Out-of-State, District-Approved Travel

With regard to student and staff, district-approved travel: any new requests for out-of-state field trips, athletics, professional development, etc. will not be approved. This restriction will remain in effect until further notice.

Cruise Ship Travel (from the CDC)

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommends travelers, particularly those with underlying health issues, defer all cruise ship travel worldwide. Cruise ship passengers are at increased risk of person-to-person spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19. To learn more, please visit their website: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/covid-19-cruise-ship. If you choose to cruise and a case of COVID-19 was reported on your ship during the cruise, you will be informed by the Department of Health to stay home for 14 days and practice social distancing.  If you return from a cruise and you exhibit illness symptoms such as fever, cough, or have trouble breathing, seek medical care and stay home for 14 days.  If you return from a cruise and no cases of COVID-19 were reported and you do not feel sick, you may report to work or school.

General Travel (from the CDC)

If you are planning to travel anywhere during spring break, we encourage you to carefully review the travel advice on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) web page at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html. This information is updated frequently and will contain the most current information about travel precautions. However, please understand that this is a rapidly evolving situation so recommendations can change daily.

**This is an important personal decision whether or not to travel, but should you do so, you must follow the CDC advisories. As such, should you choose to travel, please plan now for any possible impact on your family.

Important Surveys from Sarasota County Schools

  • Mobile Device Needs Survey
    • We are asking parents & guardians of traditional public school students to complete a brief online survey. The survey can be found by going to www.sarasotacountyschools.net/deviceneedssurvey. It is important that we gather this information for our teachers NOW so they can continue to provide instruction virtually if school closures occur in the future. If you can’t access the survey, please contact the district’s Information Technology department at 941-927-9000, ext. 31350.
  • Superintendent Search Survey
    • The school district is actively seeking input from staff and the community through an online survey. Community members can access the Superintendent Search Survey online here. The online survey will close on Thursday, April 2. Please visit www.sarasotacountyschools.net/superintendentsearch often, as items will be continuously updated as new information becomes available.

We wish all our teachers, staff, students, parents & families a safe and restful Spring Break!
