School Advisory Council Minutes

Venice Elementary

October 12, 2017

The meeting was called to order at 7:36 by Chair, Bethany Burnett. A recap of the Publix Math Night was shared by Bethany Burnett, Kaitlin Randlett, and David Waring. 40 families attended this event and many other schools in the area are now interested in participating in this event. There was a huge interest in this event by community members and many would like to volunteer at our next Publix Math Night. Due to Hurricane Irma and sports, the Council felt this was a direct result in smaller numbers participating. The next event will be held in December. It will be a holiday themed event and will be held on a Thursday night. Families will be asked to arrive at designated times based on their last names. Teachers and staff will be asked to attend so they can be in the different sections of Publix. Students that attend will receive a no homework pass for that night.

The minutes from the September meeting were read and changes were made to the minutes.  Heather Masden made a motion to approve the minutes with the changes and Mollee McFarlane seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

The 2017-2018 School Improvement Goals and Plan were presented to SAC for approval by Erin del Castillo. Venice Elementary was once again an A school and made an overall gain of 48 points through the FSA grades 3-5 testing. A copy of the goals and plan will be available to the staff. A full copy of the VES School Improvement will be available in the front office for community members to access and will also be available on the VES website. Wendy Smith made a motion to pass the 2017-2018 School Improvement goals and plan. Chandra Reilly seconded the motion and the plan was passed unanimously.

Erin del Castillo also shared that VES has been a 5 Star school for the past 23 years and we were recognized at the October School Board Meeting. She thanked Chandra and Bethany for working on the 5 Star notebook.

Bethany Burnett present the A+ Bonus Ballot to the committee. 6% of the staff voted 80% of the amount awarded, will go towards bonuses as listed above. 20% of funds will be allotted to all current instructional staff for educational classroom purchases. While 94% of the staff voted Our entire A+ Award will be used as bonuses for all staff employed in 2015-2016. This amount is unknown at this time. Rick Costa made a motion to approve the A+ Bonus Ballot and Kaitlyn Joyner seconded the motion. It was passed unanimously.

All SAC members were trained using the Power Point from the Sarasota County School Board and any questions were answered by Bethany Burnett and Erin del Castillo.

Upcoming events were shared by the committee members: Stem Parent Night at Venice High School will be November 16, 2017. This is a new partnership between VHS and VES to increase mentoring with the engineering students and VES. The PBS Fall Festival will be held October 13, 2017 and it is 25 Indian Bucks for students to attend during their specials times.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:12 by Bethany Burnett. A motion was made by Shannon Wright to adjourn and seconded by Missy Mullivhill. The motion was passed unanimously.
