5.37 Student Dress and Grooming

I. In order to promote an orderly learning environment in our schools while preparing students for later success in the world of work, the School Board of Sarasota County has established procedural guidelines for student dress. Individual schools are expected to use the district dress and grooming guidelines as minimum standards and are encouraged to extend their own standards to meet the uniqueness of their school community. Dress codes shall prohibit a student, while on the grounds of a school during the regular school day, from wearing clothing that exposes underwear or body parts in an indecent or vulgar manner or that disrupts the orderly learning environment. Annually in the spring, each school shared decision-making body will review the school’s dress code based on input from staff, parents and students.

II. A Sarasota County public school may implement a mandatory uniform policy by meeting procedural guidelines adopted by the School Board as permitted in state statute.

III. The principal at each school is responsible for establishing and enforcing a student dress code or the school uniform policy. The principal’s decision on the appropriateness of dress will be final.
