4.431 Field Trip Medication Training for Teachers and Staff

I. This policy establishes a uniform system for field trip medication administration training to ensure that students on school sponsored day or overnight field trips/events (or events) safely and accurately receive prescribed medication.

School board staff assigned to administer student medication on school sponsored day or overnight field trips/events (overnight or day field trips/events) must successfully complete medication administration training and Field Trip Medication Administration Skills Checklist prior to the scheduled trip.

No administration of medication will be done without signed permission from the student's parent/guardian.

II. Scope

This policy will apply to selected Sarasota County School Board employees, designated by the school principal to administer medication during school sponsored day or overnight field trips/events.

III. Procedures

The field trip medication administration designee will:

A. View the Medication Administration Training Video.

B. Meet face to face with the school RN for further discussion and a skills check.

C. Have on file in the health room a signed and dated Field Trip Medication Administration Checklist.

IV. Over-the-Counter Medication

A. In accordance with policy 5.62 and F.S. 1002.20, a student may possess and use a medication regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration for over- the-counter use to treat and/or relieve headaches while on school property or at a school-sponsored event or activity without a physician's note or prescription.
