Brentwood Title I

Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act is the largest program of Federal funding in education, signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson and reauthorized in 1995. The purpose of Title 1 is to assist schools in improving student achievement, staff development, and parental involvement. It is intended to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic standards and assessments.

Title 1 provides flexible funding that may be used to provide additional instructional staff, professional development, extended-time programs, and other strategies for raising student achievement. It provides a mechanism for holding states, school districts, and schools accountable for improving the academic achievement of all students and turning around low performing schools (those with 40% or more students from low-income families).

Schools utilize Title 1 funds to enhance the regular district instructional program. Schools use these funds to:

  • Add high-quality staff

  • Support parent and community involvement

  • Enhance staff development

  • Purchase additional instructional materials and supplies

  • Add technology and needed equipment

At Brentwood, we use funds to host family training events and to impact staff development efforts. Each grade level plans and presents a parent training night. These parent information programs may include FSA Math and Reading, FSA Writing, and other literacy training. We also sponsor an annual meeting for all Title 1 parents and involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of our Title 1 school. During the school day, we provide remediation to students, both academic and behavioral.  Morning tutorials and targeted assistance sessions are also offered to students in need.
