Brentwood Gifted and Talented Education
GATE Program
We offer a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) class at each grade level, 1st-5th, which engages students in enrichment activities that enhance creativity and high-order thinking skills. The GATE program motivates and challenges high-achieving students to reach their fullest potential by allowing them to study content with greater depth and complexity and at a more accelerated pace than what may be done in a regular classroom. GATE students interact and collaborate with intellectually similar students throughout each day.
They are given opportunities to use cooperative learning and problem-solving skills to complete imaginative projects based on learning styles and interests. At Brentwood, Certified Gifted teachers provide a differentiated curriculum which meets the unique needs of our gifted and talented students.
GATE Selection Process
Students may qualify for enrollment into the GATE program:
based on the previous year's academic performance. Teachers utilize a matrix of criteria to determine eligibility. Enrollment in the GATE program is based upon the overall matrix score, with priority placement given to those with the highest scores.
if they are identified gifted as determined by Sarasota County guidelines. Gifted identification secures a student's placement in the program.
Gifted Identification Procedures for Parents
Students may be referred by their parents or school staff for gifted screening. Parents can request a gifted screening by contacting our ESE Liaison. If your child scores 130 on the gifted screening, then the following items are collected to determine eligibility for the gifted program:
Proof of residency in Sarasota County
Licensed psychologist's evaluation reporting IQ (and academic achievement test scores if interested in Pine View or full-time cluster site)
Gifted characteristics rating scale
Report card grades spanning one year
