• Mental Health Resources and Downloads

    Mental health is a crucial part of overall health and wellbeing. Talking about mental health helps improve our community because it allows us to maintain positive mental health, break down stereotypes, improve relationships, and begin to take the stigma out of something that affects us all. Now, more than ever, the school district is committed to ensuring that all our students and families have the support and access to high-quality resources.

    To increase awareness and conversation regarding mental health, Sarasota County Schools will be providing mental health videos and activities every week. These activities are designed to be appropriate for our students in grades 6-12. These videos can be viewed, and activities can be completed, in the comfort of your own home! Check this webpage frequently as additional resources, information, and activities will be added EVERY week.

    Exploring the Consequences of Actions

    This week in The Imagine Neighborhood, Scotty and Princess Donnasaurus have a big problem to solve: Sock goblins have stolen all of the socks in the neighborhood, right before the Sock Puppet Festival! To save the festival and return everyone’s socks, Scotty and Princess Donnasaurus need to track down those tricky sock goblins and find a way to recover their missing socks—without any sock goblins biting their toes. They explore a few different ideas and those ideas’ consequences before finally settling on the best solution.
    In this episode, we talk about creating if-then plans: breaking down the problem-solving process into steps to make it easier. It can be hard to find the right solution, especially when big feelings are involved. Creating an if-then plan helps kids and adults see different solutions to find the one that works best and is the fairest. And, like all skills, it’s okay if it’s difficult at first: We all get better at problem-solving with practice!

    Keeping Calm

    There is a wide range of mindfulness activities for kids from deep breathing to even blowing bubbles. In this activity, you will learn to focus on the present moment by identifying something that helps them calm down.

    First, print out the worksheet. The first page will prompt you for things you can see, hear, smell, and think about that help them calm down. And the second page is for you to draw a picture or print out an image of something (or things) that helps you calm down

    Calming Activity

    This is a great calming activity or coping tool to use when students need to cool down after an active lesson, are having a stressful moment, or need an emotion regulation strategy.

    While based on the active rest between each Zoo Academy assessment scene, geared towards K-1 students, this calming activity could be used with students of any age. Students will use Lester the bird’s flying to visualize when to breathe. When Lester flies up, they’ll breathe in, and when Lester flies down, they’ll breathe out.

    Coping Strategies

    Coping strategies are important because they help us balance our overall mental health. In this lesson, we will define stress and identify healthy coping strategies to deal with the stressors in your life.  At the end of this video, you will create your own personal stress plan to help you utilize healthy coping strategies and reduce stress in your life!
