    Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for students in grades K-12 and college. The goal is to learn creative problem-solving strategies, teamwork, brainstorming, self-reliance, and respect for the individual strengths of team members. Teams of five to seven students follow strict guidelines to develop solutions to a long-term problem over several months. In addition, they practice for a spontaneous problem that is presented at the competition. Students work together, without adult assistance, to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve these problems. Teams, problems, and competitions are organized into five divisions by age groups (Primary, I, II, III and IV).

Brentwood’s Odyssey of the Mind Team has been competing since 2007 and each year has advanced to the State competition held in Orlando, Florida. In 2008-2009, our team placed 2nd in the state of Florida, which advanced them to the World competition in Ames, Iowa.

In the 2010-2011 school year, Brentwood's awesome team of students participated in the “Extreme Mousemobiles” challenge, Division I. In this challenge, the team built a vehicle, powered only by mousetraps, that performed tasks as it traveled around an obstacle course. More than 150 teams from 33 U.S. states and the nations of Cameroon, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, and Switzerland participated in that year’s World Finals. BRENTWOOD PLACED FIRST IN THE WORLD in its division at the competition, which was held in Washington, D.C. at the University of Maryland in College Park, May 27-30. Congratulations, Team Brentwood, on your amazing achievements.

    Brentwood Run Club

The goal of the Brentwood Run Club is to instill the idea that fitness is fun and exciting. Students that learn this at an early age are more likely to develop fitness habits that are carried throughout their lives. In reading, we talk about building our endurance or stamina for comprehending long passages. The same principle applies to running. Running strengthens a child’s heart, lungs, circulatory system, and muscles. Improved physical fitness allows children to play better, adapt to new skills, prevent injuries and recover more easily from illness or injury.

The Brentwood Run Club has been running for more than five years. We have participated in several area races:  Bradenton Jingle Bell Run, Sarasota YMCA Bridge Run, The Mayor’s 5K Run, Phillipi Shores 7K, and Sammy’s Run. We train here at Brentwood on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons. We are always looking for volunteers to run and train with us! Feel free to contact Mr. Weida if you are available. Brentwood Run Club is sponsored by the Manasota Track Club and Si McAninch, DDS.

     B.A.D.  Brentwood Active Dads

According to the U.S. Department of Education, children whose fathers participate in their school activities are more likely to have higher test scores, better academic achievement, increased attendance, and fewer behavior problems. That's the reason we want you--Fathers, Step-Fathers, Grandfathers, Uncles, Mentors, and Big Brothers--to become a member of our Brentwood Active Dads (B.A.D.). Come join us throughout the year in special activities for dads and their kids such as board game nights, pumpkin carving, baseball games, and community service projects. All activities are scheduled in the early evenings. Don't miss out on these fun nights of fellowship!
