School Board Members Group Picture

The School Board of Sarasota County sets policy for the school district that advances educational opportunities for all students. Comprised of five members elected county-wide, each School Board member serves four-year terms on an alternating basis and works to advance legislative priorities that best meet the needs of all students in the school district. School Board members are also responsible for appointing a school superintendent who directs the day-to-day academic and operational strategies of the school district.

School Board meetings take place twice a month – check out the upcoming calendar for agenda items and opportunities to address the Board during public meetings.

School Board elections occur biennially. The electoral process commences with the August Primary Election, during which candidates may secure their seats outright or advance to the subsequent November election.

Following the November General Election, incumbent or newly elected Board Members commence their terms. Swearing-in ceremonies typically take place within two weeks of the election.

Subsequent to the November elections, the appointment of the Chair and Vice-Chair takes place during the Reorganization Meeting. Newly elected board members are formally inducted into office during this session.
