    8/30/23 - Noon Update:

Good morning SCS employees & families,

Our traditional public schools that were serving as emergency evacuation centers have closed and are in the process of being cleaned and reconfigured to welcome back students & employees. All of our traditional public schools will reopen tomorrow for normal school operations including transportation services, food services, and after school activities. Additionally, the Superintendent Listening Tour meetings slated for tomorrow evening (Thursday, August 31) will both be held as scheduled. If you are receiving this message and your child is enrolled at a charter school, please check directly with your school for updates on reopening.

We wanted to share a few important general considerations and safety reminders as we return back to school:

    • School buses will be running their normal routes, but there may be some delays due to receding water and excess traffic moving through the county. As a reminder, our district uses WheresTheBus, which offers real-time route updates. For more information about the app and how to sign up, please visit: www.sarasotacountyschools.net/Page/3459
    • If your child usually walks or bikes to school, please consider “testing out” their usual route to ensure that biking/walking is still a safe travel option.
    • Families, please let your school know if returning to school is a hardship – our school-based & district teams can help provide resources where possible.
    • Employees, please let your supervisor know if you will need to take time off before you can safely return to work.

Please be sure to follow us on social media (@sarasotaschools) and visit www.sarasotacountyschools.net/hurricane to stay current with the latest school-related updates. Thank you!

    Tuesday
    8/29/23 - 3pm Update:

Good afternoon SCS employees & families,

As a reminder, all of Sarasota County’s traditional public schools will remain closed tomorrow (Wednesday, August 30) and all afterschool activities remain cancelled. This is out of an abundance of caution and to accommodate the needs of the traditional public schools that are currently serving as emergency evacuation centers.

The reopening of our traditional public schools for normal school operations will ultimately depend on the track that Hurricane Idalia takes. Our school teams will need time to clean and prepare the schools to receive students & employees once again. We will send out an update about school reopening as soon as possible after the storm passes and it’s safe for our school district Facilities team to assess the condition of our schools & campuses.

If you have not done so already, please bookmark www.sarasotacountyschools.net/hurricane -- we’ll be sharing the latest school-related updates here as information becomes available. We’ll also be sharing these updates on our social media platforms – please follow:
