• Summer 2020 Boost: Personalized Academic Instruction

    Middle Schools Overview

    Summer 2020 Boost is high quality, personalized academic instructional support provided for students. This Personalized Academic Instruction opportunity is for middle school (MS) students who have earned an Incomplete (“I”) during Remote Learning from April 6 – May 29, or students who need Course Recovery due to failures and possible retention.

    Dates and Times

    June 3 – June 30, 2020 (20 Days)

    June 3 Training & Transition Day - June 4 Contact with families & Teacher Planning – June 5 Contact with families and instruction begins

    Times: Flexible hours for teachers - 5 hours per day - (Instruction, Planning & Family Contact Time)

    Staffing for each school site

    • Number of teachers assigned will be driven based upon need: Suggested ratio 1:10-12
    • Teachers would be responsible for students across schools based on numbers of Incompletes and the number of students needing Course Recovery
      • Note: Based on enrollment numbers, balancing of staffing could occur at any time
      • Teachers selected per content area based on final grades (Social Studies, Math, Science, ELA)
    • Assistant Principal (AP) to oversee implementation and monitoring, working in tandem with the MS Director of Curriculum and Instruction
    • ESE Teacher to support teachers and students in all subjects
    • 1 Social Worker, Home School Liaison, or Guidance Counselor at each site to help address the social/emotional needs of our students
    • ESE and/or ESOL Paraprofessionals (preferred bilingual): number based upon need to support ESOL students/families
    • Registrar (10 hours) needed to input documentation and entering grades the last week of June

    Advantages of this remote learning program

    • Risk of COVID 19 virus is eliminated
    • Elimination of transportation costs
    • Targeted, individualized support for ALL at risk students with Incompletes and those needing Course Recovery
    • Allows schools time to adequately prepare for resuming face-to-face schooling in August

    Access and Curriculum Content

    • ALL participating students must have internet access and a computer device OR be able to pick up/return Remote Learning Packets
      • If students currently have a district device/hot spot checked out, they will keep it until the end of June; Participating students who need a device/hot spot will pick them up at their schools
    • APEX curriculum will be used for “I” Incompletes and Course Recovery
    • Paper packets, only if needed
    • Inner Explorer to support SEL needs (Guidance Counselors will work with students/families)

    General Framework for Personalized Academic Instruction

    • Whole Group: 30 minutes
    • Small Group: 30 minutes per group (two groups of 5 or 6) = 1 hour
    • One-on-one Instruction: 15 minutes per day/per student = 3 hours
    • Planning: 30 minutes/day

    Points to Consider

    • Development of individualized tutoring plans to include goals and curriculum for Summer Boost will address learning gaps, and the following questions will be considered:
      • Was the student unsuccessful with online learning during the Remote Learning Period?
      • Did they partially complete work in Apex? If so, how much?
      • Was their work completed in a platform other than Apex – if so, what needs to be completed?
      • Did the student do any of the paper-based packets? How many weeks of work? What were their scores?
      • Is the student ESE? ELL? Do they need extended time? Other support?

    Roles and Responsibilities

    AP: Prior to Personalized Learning

    • Teacher/Staff Selection
    • Confirm list of a targeted students
    • Call or email families to confirm participation\
      • Send a welcome message to families
      • Outline remote learning opportunities for students
      • Update working phone numbers and addresses
    • Develop a “class list” of a ratio of up to 1:10-12 students for each course
    • Coordinate personalized learning plans for each student
    • Coordinate June 3rd training needs with Program Specialists

    AP: Site Coordination

    • Be available to support students, parents, and teachers
    • Collect time sheet logs and submit to bookkeepers
    • Collect communication logs
    • Review completion data
    • Assist with communication platforms when needed
    • Work with Registrar for final grades in SIS
    • Collect timesheets from each contracted employee and submit to the bookkeeper

    Teacher

    • Develop a relationship with each student on their caseload: Identify academic strengths, areas of need, hobbies, family needs, etc.
    • Create daily Personalized Academic Instruction lesson plans for each individual student
    • Check-in daily with the administrator/ESE Teacher/Guidance Counselor for continued support
    • Complete daily timesheet for hours worked and submit to site administrator
    • Work Monday – Friday
    • Hours are flexible
    • Schedule virtual office hours with students to connect for one-on-one instruction and support
    • Communicate with students daily using Microsoft Office 365/TEAMS, phone, Zoom, email, etc.
    • Maintain a daily contact log of ongoing communication
    • Provide grades at the end of Summer Boost (directions TBD)
