Welcome Letter: Families
March 27, 2020
To our precious children and their families,
We are hoping you and your family are healthy and remain that way over the coming days!
This Instructional Continuity for Academic Needs (ICAN) Plan is a way for our teachers to connect with your children and provide learning opportunities as we all navigate these unchartered waters. You will find the assignments and responsibilities for your child and their teachers in sections dedicated to their grade/course. You will also find a seemingly endless section on additional resources that are linked to make it easier for you to actually have fun with your child.
Our top priority in the development of this plan was recognizing that these are extremely stressful days for everyone! We tried to balance the need to support our children’s learning opportunities with the fact that all of us may be functioning at the lowest levels on Maslow’s hierarchy: trying to meet our physiological and safety needs. To help, we hope you will start each day with Inner Explorer, a social-emotional web-based program offered to you for free (thanks to our friends at Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation). Also, the Crisis Text Line is another resource for all of us who need help handling anxiety or stress: Just text HERE4U to 741741.
Some of our high school teachers shared that Commissioner Corcoran asked Florida Districts to handle the remote learning plans with “compassion and grace”. Our teachers shared Dr. Brad Johnson’s quote:
- Relationships before rigor
- Grace before grades
- Patience before programs
- Love before lessons
Our teachers are excited to lead your child through this new way of learning and they want to connect with you! Please be patient if you are called by multiple teachers in the beginning. We want you to have the latest and very best communication we can possibly bring you. Our teachers are your link to this plan, and they want to find the optimum ways to support your child.
In times of great challenge, with the right support, our children and teachers know that if we persevere WE CAN succeed. Thank you for partnering with us on this remarkable learning journey!
With love and gratitude (and compassion and grace),
From your dedicated Sarasota County Schools staff
