Mu Alpha Theta
Run by Ms.Thomas
Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society with over 88,000 student members by June each school year in more than 1,800 schools. The North Port High School Golden Paw Chapter is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students.
The 50th Annual National Mu Alpha Theta Convention will be held from July 19-24 in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Full Membership
High school students in grades 9 through 12, at the school where their permanent record resides, who have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and in addition have completed or are enrolled in a still more advanced course, are eligible for full membership providing their mathematical work was done with distinction. On the 4-point grading scale, this shall mean at least a 3.0 grade point average.
Associate Membership
High school students in grades 9 through 12, at the school where their permanent record resides, who have completed two semesters of algebra or the equivalent with distinction and are enrolled in, or have completed, a semester of geometry or of second year algebra, are eligible for associate membership. Associate members do not pay the initiation fee, but should be registered with the national office so that they may attend the National Convention or compete in National competitions. They are not entitled to vote on national policy, however. They are entitled to attend and be heard at meetings and presumably are likely candidates for full membership.
Competitions we will participate in this year:
- National Log 1 Contest
- FGCU Math Invitational
- FGCU STEM Competition
- The American Mathematics Competition (AMC)

When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, the hope of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) was to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while developing characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921.
National Honor Society members are reminded that we will have a meeting Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. It is accessible via Zoom - see the NHS blackboard page for link.
Also, dues must be paid ASAP - information for this is also on Blackboard.

Thespian Troupe 6328
Dena Henderson and Ryan Oliver
Founded in 1929, the International Thespian Society is an honorary society for students in the theatre arts. It embraces and rewards good work by students in acting and technical theatre production. Students who want to join Thespians must complete certain requirements before being issued an invitation to induction. Students must participate in 2 full length shows or 1 full length and 2 one acts and they must earn 10 points. Points are awarded for participating in productions based on a points system and additional points can be earned through other theatre work at the 1 point for every 10 hours of work. As students continue in Thespian membership, they can also earn additional honors including their letter, honor bar, national honors medal, and international honors medal. We also attend the Florida Thespian District 6 Festival and the Florida State Thespian Festival. At these events students can potentially perform and be evaluated by judges, participate in professional theatre workshops, attend plays and musicals, and participate in college and scholarship auditions.
