School Profile
Wilkinson Elementary school is nestled among beautiful oak trees in the heart of Sarasota County. The school serves just over 500 students, which draws most of its population from the surrounding area. It is located on Wilkinson Road just off Beneva Road between Bee Ridge and Proctor. With close proximity to the Faulhaber Fab Lab, Suncoast Polytech High School and Suncoast Technical College, students are able to participate in unique learning partnerships regularly.
Students and families also benefit from amazing community support including over 300 community volunteers who are on the campus regularly serving as mentors and providing unique learning opportunities to students.
Wilkinson staff provides rigorous and relevant learning opportunities to students regularly. In addition to general K-5 educational classrooms, we have aK-5 STEAM Academy focused on collaborative and innovative learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics as well as our LEAD Academy for Advanced Work and Gifted Students.
STEAM Academy
Wilkinson's STEAM Academy is a K-5 learning opportunity for students who seek collaborative learning opportunities focused on improving academic achievement and closing the achievement gap through creative investigative experiences in the classroom using the “five e’s”: engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate.
LEAD Academy for Gifted/Advanced Work Students (LEARNING, ENRICHMENT, AND ACCELERATION DESIGN)
Research shows that gifted students in high-ability programs such as L.E.A.D. have produced marked academic achievement gains as well as increases in attitude toward the subjects in which these students are grouped (Rogers, 1991, see http://www.gifted.uconn.edu/nrcgt/)
L.E.A.D. incorporates both acceleration and enrichment into the daily curriculum in all subject areas. A key component of the program is project-based learning across the curriculum.
The ultimate goal of L.E.A.D. is to provide challenging instruction with an emphasis on problem-solving, a higher level thought processes, discussion, and high-quality student-generated products. This will all be done in a self-contained learning environment conducive to developing and expanding students' individual abilities.
