One-half credit must be earned in Personal Fitness and the other half must be earned through a choice of several course electives. Students are scheduled by class and grade and not by sex.

An extra curricular athletic program is provided for the students who desire to move to a higher level of competition with other schools.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the physical education program are correlated to those of Venice High School and are aimed at each individual. In general, "a sound mind in a sound body"is the primary goal;and activities are planned to teach this goal.

1. Provide strenuous activity to develop muscular and cardiovascular development.

2. Teach the importance of exercise and fitness to obtain and maintain fitness throughout life.

3. Develop sense of self-worth and self-confidence through physical conditioning.

4. Develop skills through participation in team activities. The outcome of these activities should help the student succeed in a competitive democratic society.

HEALTH PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS

It is the philosophy of Venice High School that students need both health knowledge and the ability to translate this knowledge into desirable health assessments and apply application decision making skills. The purpose of this course is to assist students with the development of essential life management skills to enhance the quality of personal and family life. Living in a complex society new "issues" arise daily and must be dealt with by our students. It is our goal:

1. To provide our students with coping skills to be successful when dealing with these complex societal issues.

2. To provide practice in the use of coping skills.

3. To provide the student with information regarding sources of community assistance.

4. To provide hands on experiences in a laboratory setting.

5. To provide for the development of a positive, emotional, social, physical, and intellectual well being.
