Programs

Early Morning Childcare Program:

Our Early Morning Childcare program will begin on Monday, August 18, 2008 in the Cafetorium. The office front door will open promptly at 7:00 A.M. Morning care hours are from 7:00 A.M. to 8:20 A.M.

A contract must be signed and on file before your child may attend morning care.

You are required to pay one month in advance of service. Because of bookkeeping requirements, payments are due promptly on the first day of each month. Since each child is holding a valuable spot in our childcare program, non-attendance days will not be refunded. The fee for morning care will be $3.00 per child plus registration fees of $25.00. For full-time students, we have divided the tuition into 10 equal payments of $54.00 per month. Registration fees plus the tuition ($79.00) must be paid on or before the first day of school. Please make checks payable to Venice Elementary School. A monthly receipt will be issued for tax purposes. There will be a $20.00 fee for checks returned by the bank because of insufficient funds.

Breakfast will be served at 8:00. Please check with the cafeteria manager Mr. Rachid regarding fees. Your child may also bring breakfast from home. Children should NOT bring in toys or games. Children will have games to play and TV to watch, including occasional movies. We would appreciate your permission to show G and PG rated movies by signing a permission form available at registration.

Younger students will be escorted to their classrooms to begin the school day at 8:30. Please discuss appropriate behavior with your child, as the program is a privilege, not a right. Children who continually disobey rules will be permanently revoked from the morning care program.

The person dropping off your child MUST come into the cafetorium to sign them in each morning. Any and all forms sent home from the morning program must be signed and returned the next day. Forms may include but are not limited to the following: parent conference request, citizenship warning, suspension notice, or dismissal notice.

Mrs. Hibner will be responsible for the operation of the program. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact her first. Should you need further assistance, please call the office to schedule an appointment with our principal, Mrs. Baus.

After-School Childcare Program:

The after-school program will begin on Monday, August 18, 2008 in the Cafetorium. It will operate on regularly scheduled school days immediately following dismissal until 6:00 P.M. NO TRANSPORTATION IS PROVIDED FROM THE PROGRAM.

Discounts are available if more than one child in a family attends and to those who receive free and reduced lunches (documentation needed at registration). The VES Science Lab:

The VES Science Lab is every child's dream. It is not surprising that when VES students are asked, "What is your favorite subject?" their reply is almost always science. The Science Lab is a state-of-the-art, high-tech, multimedia, hands-on classroom. Instruction is as varied as it is exciting. Lessons range from computer simulation programs such as Bontanical Gardens or Oceans Below, to the study of velociy by building marble roller coasters with foam insulation tubing, to examining a paramecium in a droplet of water under a video microscope. The lessons are hands-on, student directed, cooperative learning experiences.

The lab contains wireless computer laptops, large screen projection TV, Promethean Active Board, and a video-microscope. In the back of the room is a demonstration table with a display mirror for student observation of experiments, and there are several cooperative work areas with science tables for the students.

The School Store:

The school store is run by staff and student employees who were interviewed and trained for their jobs. These employment opportunities allow our students to learn a sense of responsibility and valuable information about the world of work.

Peacemaking Program:

The Peacemaking Program helps children at Venice Elementary School develop social skills and strategies to resolve conflict. In recognition of outstanding efforts in peacemaking, the Southwest Florida Peace Coalition presented the 2004 Peace Pole Award to Venice Elementary. An international symbol of peace and cooperation, the peace pole project began in Japan at the end of World War II. Kids at VES are happy to join the worldwide effort to bring peace to all people.

Developed by George Drummond, the Peacemaking Program begins with comprehensive classroom lessons presented by the guidance counselor and reinforced by teachers and staff. Peace Corners in grades 2 through 5 give children a place to practice responsibility. Kids are able to resolve their problems 97% of the time, without adult assistance. For persistent problems, parents and staff can request a personal mediation by the counselor. No effort is left undone to provide a safe and happy learning environment for everyone.

The Peacemaker Tree in the cafeteria blooms with the good deeds of children at school. At the end of the month, peacemakers earn a peace pencil and parents receive a thank you letter for sending a peacemaker to school.

The Peacemaking Program results in less stress for kids, more time on task, and a happier school atmosphere. As the Southwest Peace Coalition knows, Venice Elementary is doing its part to produce peaceful citizens of tomorrow.
