Small Learning Communities at SHS

A Personalized Education Plan

Jobs in the 21st century require high academic and technical skills. There will be more than 20,000 new job titles created in the next decade. To prepare for this challenging labor market, students need to begin thinking about the type of occupation the would like to pursue. Our learning communities provide challenging 3-years plans as road maps to future careers.

Some important things to know:

  • Communities are clusters of classes geared toward a career focus.
  • Academies are areas of study within a community.
  • Not all of the SHS communities are divided into academies.
  • Every student will belong to a small learning community.
  • Students may join only one learning community.
  • Choose a community/academy that best suits you.
  • Changing to a different community is permitted only once a year at registration.
  • Acquire a Community Certificate, which indicates completion of the community or academy requirements.
  • Community Certificate requirements are listed on the 3-year plan for each community or its academy.
  • Elective credits earned during the ninth grade count towards a Community or Academy Certificate.
  • Students that are recommended may take any honors or AP class.
  • Students may take electives associated with any community or academy. Check prerequisites
