The regular monthly meeting of the Venice High School School Advisory Council was called to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Administrative Conference room on December 8th with the following members present:  Cheryl Bolton, Leslie Bachtel, Gary Mitchell, Pamela Groff, Lisa Callaghan, Greg B. Miller, Steve Joselson, Sharon Tritschler, Bill Mowry, Susan DeCosta, Bob Hirter, Candy Millington and Vicki Ragas.

Mr. William Mowry presented the first agenda item which was a status report on the latest FCAT results.  The data showed that the October test group passed at a rate between 40-55%.  This is a commendable results considering the most of the participants have had previous problems with passing the FCAT.

The next discussion item was an update from the PMT which was delivered by Mrs. Leslie Bachtel.  She informed the SAC that a change in the VHS “logo” and colors had been offered up for consideration by students.  The PMT has been gathering input from its representative members. The trend has been to maintain the current design and colors, but SAC input is being encouraged prior to any final decisions are made.

Sharon Tritschler presented a county-wide status report on the Smaller Learning Communities’ initiative.  The entire county is following the suggested time line and the status of the grant is totally positive.  Mrs. Tritschler outlined the five career academies for Venice High School:  Life Sciences, Arts and Communications, Science/Math and Engineering, Venice International Business and the Honors Academy.  These academies are completing organizational plans for next year’s student registration.

Principal, Candy Millington presented an update on the Southern Accreditation building report.  The designs for the completion of the music suite project were reviewed and should be approved by the School Board at an upcoming meeting.

Mr. Greg Miller gave a brief report on the newly hired superintendent.  He commented that Dr. Norris was an experienced superintendent who brings with him a wealth of experiences and educational expertise.  It was noted that Dr. Norris is a graduate of Kansas State and is a fellow alumni with Mr. Miller who was attired in purple and white.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8 p.m. and our next meeting will be in January .
