FCAT Incentives:  Marie Naple reported that the soccer ball tipped pencils have arrived.  After looking at other alternatives, the cost of these pencils was less expensive and so were purchased.  They will be distributed to fourth and fifth grade students during the March 3-5 testing.

Grandparents’ Day:  Marie Naple reported that we have had a good response. The associated costs of the event totaled $78.60.  Marie’s students will be stuffing the bags with the goodies for the grandparents.  Albertson’s has agreed to provide all the baked goods for the day, as long as they are the only grocery represented – OK!  Juice, coffee will be provided by the VES cafeteria.  Flyers for the garage sale will be given to the grandparents as they arrive by student patrols.  The dates are:  January 23rd for K-2 and five of the ESE classes (those with younger students) and January 24th for 3-5 and Mrs. Dodge, Mrs. Starkey and Mrs. Burton.  The second grade students will entertain on the 23rd and the fifth grade students on the 24th.  After the program in the cafeteria, the grandparents will go to the classrooms for a visit and then tour the campus.  Kathy Dean volunteered to decorate on the 23rd and Debi Hammett volunteered for the 24th.  Nancy MacDonald had agreed to see if she could get flowers for the “awards”.  I spoke with her and everything is all set – she will contact Marie.

Badges:  Jan Molin reported that PALS has no position on permanent badges for volunteers.  Since everyone needs to sign in at the office computer for hours (a 5-Star requirement) and for insurance purposes, there was concern expressed that if the parents/volunteers had a permanent badge, they would not sign in.  We only have 112 approved volunteers and only 75 of those had hours last semester.  The main issue seems to be one left over from the temporary administration and is something the current administration feels comfortable dealing with.  It was suggested that new kindergarten parents be given permanent badges for parent pickup purposes only since they would not be “known” to the staff and other parents.  Mrs. Baus will discuss with that team.  Work is being done to allow parents/volunteers to sign in while in the classrooms.

Garage Sale:  Kathy Dean reported that the sale will be held on March 1st from 8am-1pm to benefit the Art, Music and PE departments.  If anyone has anything to donate contact Jack Parsons or Kathy Dean or bring to portable 10.  Any donated items not sold will be donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army.  Volunteers are needed for the set up and the sale.

Climate Survey:  Mrs. Baus reported that the staff climate survey will be done at the next faculty meeting but that SAC needed to decide who should collect them.  In the past, Bonnie D’Anielo has gathered them and sent them to the Landings.  After some discussion, it was decided this was still acceptable.  Parents should be reminded to call in for the climate survey as we have only had 23 parents call so far.  Ideas to remind parents include:  the marquee, the teacher newsletters, a special flyer and the on-hold answering machine.

Five-Star:  Amy Baker was happy to report that Jeff Callan and Colleen Pazderski have almost completed the requirements for the Business Partner section of our notebook.  We will add this to the agenda for February’s meeting so everyone knows what they need for the notebook.

VES Rumor Mill:  Mrs. Baus reported that there is a committee that will present a position to the school board this month or next.  The only known members are Richard Hayes and Bill Muth.  All comments Mrs. Baus have heard have been positive for VES – there has been no indication that the recommendation will be to close the school.  Mrs. Baus will notify us when the school board will hear the recommendations from the committee so that a group may go to represent our cause, if necessary.
