We welcomed Mrs. Baus, our new principal, to her first SAC meeting.

FCAT Incentives:  Marie Naple reported that in the past we spent over $600.00 for incentives for the fourth and fifth grade students taking FCAT.  It was felt that spending that large amount of money wasn’t necessary.  From the brochure used in the past, there were two pencils that seemed appropriate and would be a significant reduction in expense (with approximately 200 students @ $0.54 the expense would be $108.00).  One had a star on the end and said “FCAT SuperStar” and the other had a soccer ball on the end with “Kick FCAT”.  Students polled preferred the soccer pencil.  There are also t-shirts left from last year with soccer balls on them that could be used for teachers.  After some discussion, it was decided to investigate other options.  Angela Holleran and Brenda Symons agreed to look into other vendors for FCAT incentives and report at our January meeting.

SDMT Report:  Bev Berstling reported that the Primary Teachers are of the opinion that there are too many choices for their students for lunch.  This causes the cafeteria lines to become clogged and slow.  Although the lunch options are not under the control of the school administration, Mrs. Baus has agreed to meet with cafeteria personnel to see what can be worked out.

Bev also reported that the teachers have decided on the supplements for this year.  Supplements are extra pay for teachers or staff for extra duties, for example:  SAC Chair, Newspaper, etc.  This year there are 13 extra jobs.  SDMT decided that these would get $500.00 extra with the exception of Technical Education (Mr. Caudle) and the Academic Awards Coordinator (Mrs. Shultz) who would get $250.00.

A+ Money:  Bev Berstling reported that the teachers have learned that they cannot use the A+ money for field trips as they thought.  There is a specific way in which the paperwork must be completed.  This is attached to the minutes from that meeting.

Grandparents Day:  Marie Naple reported that all the invitations are ready to be mailed we are just waiting for the purchase of postage.  The printing was $70.59 and the postage will be $111.00.  There are 300 invitations going out.  Last year we had little note pads and pencils that were given out.  SAC agreed to again purchase the pads through the County printing office and the pencils through the school store supplier.  The dates are January 23rd for k-2 and 5 of the ESE classes and January 24 for 3-5 and the other 3 ESE classes.  Our music teacher is working on the musical program for this special day.  Bev Berstling asked that we make sure that the grandparents attending are aware of the garage sale being held the next day to benefit the Art, Music and PE departments.

Permanent Name Badges:  Tabled until the January meeting as Jan Molin was unable to attend today.

Indian Run T-shirt design:  SAC members chose the winners for the design contest.  There will be two designs combined to make the 2003 shirt.  The winners were Bailey Molin and Alex Bracken.

Five Star Notebooks:  If anyone has any questions about their section, please see Amy Baker.

Venice Elementary Rumor Mill:  Concern was expressed about the rumors that seem to be running rampant about the closing of Venice Elementary.  Mrs. Baus told us that she really didn’t know anything but would speak with John Zordich or invite him to our January meeting to address the issue.  The new class reduction law could cause some major changes for surrounding schools that could affect Venice Elementary.  It was felt that the community has a right to know what the future of this school is.

Our next meeting is January 9, 2003, 8:00 a.m. in the media center

Everyone have a safe and peaceful holiday!  See you in the New Year!
