Old Business

The School Improvement Plan, approved at the September SAC meeting, was distributed.  The SAC membership policy was reviewed and the need to attend regularly was stressed.

New Business

Mrs. Courtright brought up the weeding of the butterfly garden.  The suggestion was to hold off on proceeding with this discussion as neither administrator was present to participate in the discussion.  We did learn that the school plans to have the district assist in making the Butterfly garden more manageable in size.

Sandy Kleer brought up her concerns about the noise level in the cafeteria. The students present agreed that they also thought the cafeteria was too loud. Michele Tegio shared what she recalled was done in the past to control behavior in the cafeteria.  The students shared that while some teachers allow students to bring books they are used to beat on the table rather than reading when finished eating.  This issue will be discussed at the next SAC meeting.

Patty Adams and Faustina Martinez presented information about the 3 upcoming Parent Empowerment meetings. The focus of these meetings will be to assist parents in improving communication with the school and to offer strategies for parents to use to improve reading comprehension.  The county health officials and local dentist will also be presenting information that shows how good health correlates to learning gains.

October 23rd there is a presentation scheduled to address ways that ESOL parents can help their children do better on the FCAT.

November 9th is the ESOL Parent Leadership night.  Teachers are creating science display boards that reflect what strategies are being used to help the ESOL children make annual learning gains.  There will presentations by the music department as well as displays by the art teachers.

Treasurer update

MaryBeth Slane reported that there is an excess of $11,000.  It was reported that more requests were being submitted to support other activities that tie in with the reading and math SIP goals.

Mary Beth Slane reminded us that we need to look for parents to join SAC.  The purpose of SAC is to provide parents a chance to have a voice and be a part of decisions at Tuttle.

Mary Beth moved to adjourn the meeting.  Maria Rodriguez seconded it.
