The meeting was called to order at 3:35 p.m. by Jeanne Medawar,

Chairperson. 

 

Review of April 26, 2006 Minutes

ü     Motion was made to accept the minutes as published.  Seconded, and approved.

 

Election of Officers

ü     Motion was made to nominate Jeanne Medawar as Chairperson, John Gammaro as Vice-Chairperson and Pam Wetherill as Recording Secretary.

ü     Seconded, and unanimously approved.

 

Review of SAC Roster

ü     The 2006-2007 SAC Roster was reviewed and all information was checked for accuracy.

ü     Motion was made to approve the SAC Roster as published.  Seconded, and unanimously approved.

 

Review of 2006-2007 Operational Guidelines

ü     The Operational Guidelines were reviewed by SAC Members.

ü     Discussion of Articles:  Composition – Item #5: was revised to read: “The Southside School Advisory Council shall consist of no less than 14 and no more than 25 members”.

ü      Motion was made to approve the 2006-2007 Operational Guidelines.  Seconded, and unanimously approved.

State Equity Complaint Process

ü     The student Equity booklets were distributed to all students on the first day of school – August 7, 2006.

ü     Booklets are available in the Principal’s office for parents who did not receive their child’s booklet.

ü     The complaint forms are also available in the Principal’s office.

 

Budget Update

ü     Student enrollment is 14 below our projected number of 647.

ü     We were over the Staffing Budget by $50,855.

ü     After review of Southside’s situation (i.e., construction, student safety, classroom coverage, etc.) the district’s decision was not to reduce staff or dollars for 2006-2007.

 

School Improvement Plan for 2006-2007

ü     School Vision – Our vision is to prepare our students to become life-long learners.

ü     School Mission – The mission of Southside Elementary is to use data driven instruction and progress monitoring to ensure the academic achievement and success of all students.

ü     Progress Monitoring is the process of on-going student assessment with immediate teacher access to test results which enhances daily classroom instruction.

ü     Review of Reading, Math & Writing Goals – student achievement high in all areas with sub-groups performing above level.

ü     Review of Science Goals – Need improvement.  Classroom teachers are collaborating with Science Teacher to ensure proficiency in FCAT Science.

ü     Progress Monitoring Data Sources were reviewed for each goal along with Strategies and Activities.

ü     New School Goal of Family and Community Involvement was discussed.  We will participate in the “International Walk Your Child to School Day” on October 3, 2006.  We are working with Police and Fire Dept. as well as Sarasota government officials, business partners, and school community to organize this student safety event.

 

The next SAC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, 2006 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Main Office.  Our new SAC member, Liz Novak is scheduled to attend the PALS Annual Fall Training on Sept. 7th at Laurel Nokomis School.
