November 24, 2003

Sarasota Middle School

Meeting was called to order by Mr. G. Leicht, Chairperson.

Minutes were presented and approved with typographical corrections.

Lottery dollar (flexible spending dollars) allocations were discussed.  Professional development substitutes, curriculum coordinators, tutoring before school, and enrichment classes are on going or planned.

School climate survey time is approaching.  Discussion centered on the use of a district provided survey or a survey constructed by SMS.  Designing our own survey vs. using a commercial survey was also discussed.  The decision was made to use the district survey.

Dress code implementation was discussed and presented by Dr. Dettman.  The general guidelines were presented with the endorsement of our PTSO and selected staff members.  Details will be developed to provide for consistent implementation.  Lisa Rotolo made the motion and Art Chido seconded, that the dress code be put into motion even if the wording needs to be addressed and what the code enforcement will be.  Motion carried.

Panther Pride was addressed, as there are some changes to the previous program such as no referrals of any type allowed.  A school committee is addressing Renaissance Recognition beyond Grade Point Averages.

School spirit shirts, presented by the PTSO, hope to raise the spirit of SMS.  Shirts can be ordered through the PTSO for about $7.  There was some discussion of promoting school spirit through the use of  Spirit Days”, etc.  SAC offered its support to this activity.

SAC nominations for 2004-2005 will be solicited through the school newsletter.  Elections will be held Jan. 26 for SAC officers.
