I.          Welcome

Peter Straw called the meeting to order at 5:34 p.m. He welcomed the group.

The minutes were approved as written, with a motion by George, seconded by Jerry.

II.         Director’s Report

·         Legislation: There is a 4.8% increase in funding to technical schools, which was less than Governor Bush’s proposal.  The Deputy Chancellor for Career/Technical Education position did not pass the legislature.  Peter said that Mike Bennett will be a guest speaker at SAMA. Roland suggested that the county lobbyist be approached for support for SCTI.  Mickey suggested cosponsoring a lobbyist for education jointly with other technical schools.

·         Special Focus Programs:  Legal Administrative Assistant program is offered mornings and two evenings with increasing enrollment.  Networking has primarily high school enrollment.  All programs have increased their enrollment.  Some programs need attention.  George suggested that the three weakest programs should be focus programs, with special effort given to increasing the enrollment and meeting the needs of the community.

III.        Old Business

·         Technical High School: On May 19, a committee of five will meet to focus on the new school.  Eventually, a dialogue with Dr. Norris would be advantageous.

·         Enterprise Florida requested that Peter Straw and SAMA list core competencies for entry-level employees.

·         Wall of Fame: SCTI Education Foundation will sponsor the reception for the Wall of Fame in the cafeteria.  The recipients will be announced at the May 19 event and the wall will be in Building 1 until a wall is built with the new school.  There are 26 nominations in two categories, alumni and significant contributors, and eight individuals will be inducted.  There are five alumni and three significant contributors. All members indicated that they could attend the event.

IV.        New Business

·         Calendar waiver: Bruce Andersen distributed a two-page Q&A document with details on the calendar waiver request. A motion to approve the waiver request was made by George McGonagill and seconded by Bill Costello.  The motion was approved unanimously.

·         Chief Costello announced that the state has eliminated Fire Science for high school students (less than 18 years old).  The decision is being challenged, but will not be able to save the program for next school year.

·         SAC membership:  David Winterrowd has formally resigned.  Carolyn Haworth has not responded to contact attempts and we will not pursue her further.  The SAC needs a student, a parent, and a business representative (financial, legal, or other specialist).  The group agreed that they would like to add a person who would represent the diversity of students at SCTI.  Any suggestions should be emailed to the chairperson directly.  All members agree to bring a bio for a potential member to the next SAC meeting.  Bruce will search for a new student representative.

V.                  SDMT Report

·         Bruce reported that the calendar waiver was approved for submission to SAC.

·                                 McFatter High School visit is scheduled for May 18 for some staff and other Landings personnel.

The next meeting will be June 13, 2005 at 5:30 pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm with a motion by Jerry, seconded by Roland.  It passed unanimously.
