Minutes

February 14, 2005

 

 

MEMBERS Present:  Bruce Andersen, Mickey Anderson, Javier Brito, Harriette Laronge, Louis Maltaghati, George McGonagill, Scott Moore, Roland Piccone, Regina Stinson, Peter Straw.

I.          Welcome

 

Peter Straw called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. He welcomed the group.

The minutes were approved by a motion by George, seconded by Harriette. 

 

II.         Director’s Report

 

1.       Focus on the Future:  A dialogue on the role of technical education in economic development will be held February 18 at SCTI.  SAC members have been invited to attend.

 

2.       Enrollment Summary:  The enrollment summary for January was distributed.

 

3.       Reports were made on special focus programs, Legal Administrative Assistant and Networking.  Numbers of registrants for next year were discussed.

 

4.       Perkins Funding for FY 2006: Member packets included a newsletter of the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium.  The newsletter reports that on February 7 the President released his FY 2006 budget that includes a .9% reduction in funding for the Department of Education, including the elimination of federal investment in Perkins.  In March, state representatives will meet with educators and the members of the school superintendents association in Tallahassee.  The county lobbyist will attend.  There was some discussion as to the coordination of leadership and function.  There were questions regarding goal setting.  It was decided that these issues could be discussed at the Focus on the Future event.

 

5.       Governor Bush’s budget: The budget recommendation for school districts may increase for school districts based on enrollment and performance based incentive, perhaps up to 7.17%.  Bruce will keep the group informed.

 

 

IIl.        Old Business

 

  • Workforce Summit: June 15, 2005: Will be held here in Sarasota with Enterprise Florida and other educators from the west coast of FL.
  • Technical High School:  The group discussed the February 9th article from the Sarasota Herald Tribune “Progress, Not Portables”, written by Christina DeNardo. George inquired as to whether the building construction department can accomplish the required tasks in the five year building timeframe quoted in the article.  

·         The Wall of Fame: The date has been set for May 19 at 5:30 p.m.  Forms are available for nominations and they were included in members’ packets.  An independent committee will consider nominations. Five to ten nominees will be selected for the Wall of Fame in 2005.

 

 

IV.        SDMT

 

Harriette reported on the last SDMT meeting.  Andy Fox reported on the work of the Marketing Committee.  The postcard that was mailed for the high school Open House on February 15 was distributed in SAC members’ packets.  Members of SDMT will consider terms of office.  The ongoing item on the use of planning time will be clarified in a discussion between Human Resources and the SCTA. 

 

 

V.      New Business

 

·         SAC membership:  Peter introduced Scott Moore of EDC was in attendance and interested in participating.  Roland moved and George seconded that he be welcomed as a member of the SAC and the motion was carried unanimously.   Peter indicated that two others are interested.  One is a lobbyist for Mote Marine and the other a member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce.

·         In-service Fund Expenditure:  An expenditure of $1080 is needed in order to renew the CRISS and CRISS+ trainer certification.  A motion was made by George and seconded by Mickey to allocate the funds and it carried unanimously.

        

        

The next meeting will be March 28, 2005 at 5:30 pm.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 pm by a motion by George, seconded by Harriette.  It passed unanimously.
