Minutes

February 9, 2004

 

 

MEMBERS Present:  Peter Straw, George McGonagill, Tim White, Jerome Greenstein, Bruce Andersen, Harriette Laronge, Alice Higgins, Ed Carthew, Bill Costello, David Winterrowd, Louis Maltaghati, Roland Piccone, Ron Turner, Mickey Anderson, Bill McKinlay.

 

GUESTS Present: Ken DeVeau, Carol Darling, Mary Ribaudo, Bob Lamb, Tim McGee, Barbara Witte.

 

I.          Welcome by Chairperson

 

Peter Straw called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. at the SCTI Fire Academy and welcomed the members and guests.

 

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as written in a motion by Roland Piccone and seconded by Jerome Greenstein.

 

II.         Director’s Report

 

·         Bruce Andersen presented enrollment data. Barbara Witte presented student distribution data per teacher and the rationale of providing data and uses of data. SAC members asked questions regarding OPPAGA requirements.

·         Bruce Andersen said the next month and following month would focus on budget.

·         Bruce Andersen presented an update of the committee’s work related to student registration. The committee is looking seriously at the student registration process especially the number of visits and restructuring the location of services.

·         Bruce Andersen announced that the RFP for computer software would be ready very soon. Data analysis, tracking, and finance will be easier with the new system.

·         Bruce Andersen is going to Tallahassee for two meetings on workforce funding this week. He will send out information after he returns regarding Federal Perkins funding and state funding.

·         Upcoming events include Open House and Counselor Career Day.

III.        Tour of SCTI Fire Academy

Bill Costello, Chief of Training for Sarasota County Fire Department, and Bob Lamb, program coordinator, presented the history of the SCTI Fire Academy. They conducted a tour for all SAC members and guests of the various buildings that make up the Fire Academy.

 

Upon return to the meeting, Mary Ribaudo said that the air compressor is obsolete and needs to be replaced at a cost of about $20,000. Harriette Laronge said the request should go to SDMT prior to coming to SAC. Mickey Anderson asked technical questions of Bob Lamb. Janice Sean said she would convene the SDMT to discuss the purchase. Roland Piccone moved to approve the purchase pending SDMT’s recommendation. George McGonagill seconded the motion. Motion passed.

IV.        SDMT Report

Harriette Laronge introduced Janice Sean, the new SDMT Chair. She presented the draft minutes of the February 5 meeting. She noted that the changes to the By-laws were made to accommodate ESOL and GED staff.

 

V.         Continuation of Director’s Report

  • Targeted Programs Update

1.       Building Construction: Carol Darling and Tim McGee, teacher, discussed recruitment efforts and barriers to recruiting high school students. SAC members made suggestions regarding recruitment strategies, such as working with administrators to gain access to students and providing information to parents. Mickey Anderson recommended that CTC Board members become involved in recruitment efforts. The Building Construction program is also working on three projects: demolish and build the new Fire Academy firefighting training station; preparing for VICA competition; and building six picnic tables for ESOL.

2.       Phlebotomy: Mary Ribaudo said that the class has eight students. There were 50-60 people at the open house of which 6-8 will probably enroll.

 

3.       Public Works: Mary Ribaudo said that Public Works is all fee support and that the program is in a positive financial situation.

Mary Ribaudo also announced that the Practical Nursing program had 100 percent pass rate on the PN exam and is the number one program in the state of Florida

 

Peter Straw reminded the members to RSVP for the Advisory Committee Appreciation Dinner.

 

Ron Turner asked if the SAC meetings could begin at 5:30 p.m. There were no objections so the March meeting and future meetings will begin at 5:30 p.m.

 

Jerome Greenstein moved to adjourn at 8:30 p.m. Mickey Anderson seconded the motion. Motion passed.
