I.          Welcome by Chairperson

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as revised in a motion by George, seconded by Jerry. A revision was suggested to the October 13 minutes, #3, add a comma.

II.         Recognition of Chris Brito

Carol Darling introduced Chris Brito, a student in Jim Dieter’s post secondary ATEP program, which is articulated with MCC. Chris placed first in Florida in Auto Service Tech competition and tenth nationally.  Chris spoke to the group about the skills required for district and national competition. Chris works at Sun Honda while he attends school.

Javier Brito, SAC member and Auto Service Tech instructor, spoke to the group about Skills USA and competitions.

IIl.        Director’s Report

  • Enrollment information was provided.  Bruce indicated that the report is from the first Monday of the month, so it is just a snapshot.  The group discussed fee support, apprenticeships, and the timing of the report.
  • Targeted Programs Update

1.       Phlebotomy: Bruce discussed Mary’s efforts with nursing homes.

2.       Public Works: Bruce said that the advisory committee met two weeks ago.

3.      Construction: Carol Darling spoke about the progress of the Construction program.  The need for express buses for high school students was discussed.

·         Technical high school projection is for a five-year plan.  Barbara Chomko indicated that the search for a new SCTI site is continuing.  She discussed several scenarios regarding the SCTI, Riverview, and ACE facilities, but said that nothing is definite yet.

III.        Old Business

  • Barbara told the group that she discussed the OPHAGA report with the SCTI staff at a recent staff meeting.  Programs should be reviewed in light of community needs. She will meet quarterly with Bruce regarding OPHAGA.
  • ACE/SCTI: ACE encompasses senior learners and adult enrichment classes.  The supervisor of ACE position will be posted shortly.  ACE will be moving temporarily to a portable structure at the old Pine view site (Euclid Ave.).  SCTI now includes the adult high school, ABE, GED, and ESOL.  Both schools provide services to the community, but with different missions.  Each is funded differently.  The group discussed several ACE/SCTI issues.
  • The group discussed the motion from the November meeting to draft a letter regarding duplication of personnel and function between ACE and SCTI.  Roland made a motion to amend his previous motion: That the direction per the SAC to draft a letter regarding the function and direction of ACE/SCTI be revisited in six months (June 2004).  George seconded it.

IV.        SDMT

SDMT has not had a formal meeting, but will later in the month.  The group discussed the advantages of the career ambassadors and the importance of their input.

V.         Discussion—New Directions, New Programs

Bruce requested that the SAC provide input into SCTI future focus and direction.  The request also included new programs that should be included in the future. The group considered relevant information they would need about programs: history of existing programs, data collected, needs of community, labor market data, the possibility of repackaging and revitalizing old programs as the new facility is planned for SCTI.  Space and lab allocation in a new facility will be a serious consideration.  Carol will provide the COE process for program initiation to the next meeting. Bruce will continue to provide information on existing programs.

The next meeting will be January 12, 2004.

George moved and Bill seconded that meeting be adjourned at 8:05 pm.  The motion was carried unanimously.
