I.          Welcome by Chairperson

II.                  Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as revised in a motion by Ed Carthew, seconded by Roland Piccone.

III.        Career Ambassadors

Harriette explained that the ambassadors have meetings once per month.  There are 10 morning and 14 afternoon ambassadors.  Steve Darvalics, a senior at Venice High School enrolled in the automotive program, is the afternoon Chairperson.  The ambassadors represent technical programs and inform other students about them and provide input on SCTI operation and marketing publications.  Steve reported on recent ambassador activities, including review of a high school program brochure.

IV.        Director’s Report

  • Targeted Programs Update
  1. Phlebotomy: Mary Ribaudo said currently there are 8 adult students.  The nature of Phlebotomy has changed over the years; Louis Maltaghati suggested we establish partnerships with nursing homes and labs to provide training to their staff.  Mary reported on contacts with SMH and Jobs ETC. to bring more students into the program.  Recruitment time for the teacher is limited and may influence her ability to make contacts during her duty day.  The advisory committee meets on Thursday, November 13.
  2. Public Works:  Public Works, a fee support program, has experienced good enrollment so far.  Karen Johnson’s contract was extended to full time based on money that will be generated from the fees for the Public Works classes.  One of the barriers we are facing is the cost for an employer to send an employee for training.  He/she pays for the cost of the class and also pays a day’s salary or wages for the employee while they attend.  The program remains on the watch list.  Ken will provide information on fees and the financial health of the program.
  3. Construction: Tim McGee spoke to the group about his background and his marketing endeavors for the program.  Four students from last year help with marketing.  He asks current students to bring others to shadow the program.  He communicates with parents regarding attendance, curriculum, and OSHA-CPR-First Aid certification.  Contact like this gives focus and hope to student and parent.  He is working toward development of a  full apprenticeship program in the future.  He stresses character, appropriate dress, timeliness, and a good mental attitude.  He is incorporating a blueprint-reading module into the course.  The class will be building a structure outside buildings 9 and 11 in order to utilize and enhance skills.  CTC Council will meet November 12th on campus.  Christy Richardson is the Coordinator and she has been very helpful in recruiting students.  The current enrollment in the program is 16.

  • Enrollment information was provided.  The report provides a one day snapshot of enrollment, using the first Monday of the month.  The total number of students served at SCTI is 3532.
  • The new site construction plan calls for opening in five years.  A gantt chart showing this five-year construction plan was distributed.  January 2006 is the decision date for opening the technical high school for the 2007-2008 school year.  Implementing this decision requires the school opening at the current SCTI campus; it would move at the end of year one with all other current SCTI programs.

V.         New Superintendent

Peter said the questions that were provided by Jerry for the superintendent interviews were used in the interviews.  He discussed the process of evaluation by multiple committees.

VI.        Marketing

Tim provided a summary of the last marketing committee meeting.  There was a discussion about strategic approach to change.  Javier explained his unique marketing plan. Mickey recognized the overlap of MCC and SCTI.  Timelines for marketing (catalog, schedule of classes, registration) should be set in place.  Then, SCTI can compete for students equally with MCC, Keiser, and other post secondary institutions. It was suggested that (1) a professional consultant be considered, like other institutions; and, (2) effective use of knowledge and skill (planning versus action) be considered.  Bruce committed to an in depth strategic review of the current marketing plan

VII.       ACEC and SCTI

Bruce spoke to Barbara Chomko regarding the relationship of ACEC and SCTI.  The group discussed the duplication of services.  Roland made a motion that a letter be drafted for the Acting Superintendent identifying the duplication of services as a problem area, and one of concern to this SAC. Louis seconded the motion.  The motion was approved by voice vote.

VIII.      SDMT Report

Harriette reviewed the protocol for the selection of the Teacher of the Year.  The 2004 SCTI Teacher of the Year is Chris Payne.  The SDMT discussed the winter party, to be held on December 18.  Bruce presented the Strategic Plan and enrollment data.  The process for the selection of the Classified Employee of the Year was discussed.  There were tours for 164 students from October 1 through November 3.  The number will increase to 300 by the end of November.

IX.        New Business

Jerry requested minutes be approved before they are posted to the BBS.

The next Café 502 is on December 11.

Paul Matisson is setting up a culinary school and Peter suggested a partnership.

Guests Maria Rodriguez, Javier Brito, and Steve Darvalics were invited to become SAC members.  The motion was made by Jerry and seconded by Tim.  Maria and Javier accepted the invitation and Steve is undecided.

The next meeting will be December 1.

Roland moved and Jerry seconded that meeting be adjourned at 8:05 pm.  The motion was carried unanimously.
