II.         Director’s Report

  • Targeted Programs Update
  1. Phlebotomy: Mary Ribaudo said that the committee, advisory group, and Dr. Manheim met last Thursday and will meet again next month.  One problem that has been recognized is that employers are training employees rather than sending them to school.  They talked about sharing links.  Jobs Etc. and Sarasota Memorial Hospital have fifteen students to be enrolled. They have reduced the cost to approximately $200.
  2. Public Works: Public Works is all fee support.  Karen Johnson is creating an internal committee and the advisory committee meets once per month.  The marquee will be used to advertise.  They may use signs on buses or apprenticeships.
  3. Construction: George, Jerry, CTC Coordinator, and Carol Darling met with Tim McGee and SCTI counselors to determine an aggressive course of action to increase the enrollment.  CTC people and SCTI counselors will be doing the recruitment of new students, to increase the program to full day after January 1. Resources have been tapped for tools and public speakers.

·         Enrollment information was provided.

·         Technical high school projection is for a five-year plan.  Site location will be near I-75, near an exit, south of Clark Road.  They will be looking at other tech centers, doing visitations.  Jerry attended a MTI advisory committee meeting recently.  They have plans all ready for a new facility but do not have a site yet.  George said that Riverview High would keep the sports facilities and the new building on their current site.  The plan may be for the Adult and Community Ed to have the new building.  Riverview will move onto the SCTI campus after SCTI vacates the propery.  Roland asked if the high school, ACEC, and SCTI would be housed together. Bruce responded hat last year ACEC involved enrichment courses and workforce development programs.  On July 1, the workforce programs became part of SCTI.  Currently SCTI focuses on workforce preparation and ACEC on enrichment. Harriette indicated that there are historical issues regarding SCTI and ACEC.  The two areas were combined at one time.  Roland inquired, if sports remain at the old site, why would Riverview need all of our acreage?  A discussion was held regarding the efficient use of taxpayer dollars and the avoidance of duplicated administrative resources.  Bruce said that Barbara Chomko should be consulted on the issue.  George asked if we would lose students from the north county as we choose a new, more southern location.  Bruce said that no change in enrollment was anticipated; at most, there may be some short-term losses.

·         Ken reported on the GL Reports, based mostly on student fees, lab fees, state supported tuition, scholarship money donated by agencies, food service, concessions, and teacher lead program.  Ken explained the Staffing Analysis, 10-day adjustment, and the amount under-budget.  The $1,945,882 is allocated among other internal accounts.  The entire budget is $12 million.  Unspent money from the previous school year is carried forward.  The school improvement funds are under the control of SAC. The contingency fund is important for investment and unexpected occurrences. SCTI is treated differently from other schools because we are not exclusively FTE based.  A discussion was held regarding a factual budget instead of the current method.

III.        Strategic Plan for Excellence

Bruce presented the Strategic Plan for Excellence’s ten goals, of which SCTI selected six.  Roland compared the 2002-03 to the plan for 2003-04 regarding teacher/community contact.  Jerry commented that the involvement of SAC is absent and should be included.  He questioned the gated entrances in the Safe and Orderly Schools section.  Bruce said that suggested processes are not included and will be delineated in another format.

IV.        SDMT Report

They talked about high school programs and career ambassadors.  Students will be asked to serve on SAC.  It was suggested that high school students serve as marketing representatives.  Harriette reported that ID badges should have larger print and bar coding for future use.  There should be more notification regarding no smoking on campus.  Campus tours will start with Booker Middle.  There will be an open house in February and National Technical Honor Society induction on March 25.  The High School Recognition event is scheduled for May 18.

The SDMT received a presentation about the new position.  Bruce spoke about the Administrator J position.  He explained the duties of the job and explained the procedure for the classification.  The position will be approximately $42,000 plus benefits.

V.         Letter Regarding Superintendent Interviews

Peter indicated that interviews begin on October 29.  He requested questions from the group to be emailed to him within three to four days.

Peter would like an ad in the SCTI Newsletter, inviting parents, community members, and students to come and observe SAC and join.

The next meetings will be November 10 and December 1.

Roland moved and Jerry seconded that meeting be adjourned at 8:05 pm.  The motion was carried unanimously.

Respectfully submitted,

Regina Stinson
