Chuck Evans called the meeting at 2:05 P.M.
The minutes of the February 12, 2004 were approved
as written.
Effa Beauette distributed information and pamphlets
for the internship program beginning with the 2004-05 school year. Bill Massolio explained that an internship
program is not a paid program, but a career exploring experience for our
students who are seeking what it’s like to walk in the shoes of a particular career
type person. Riverview will be
contacting sponsors who may be interested in this program for our students and
asking them to commit an hour to an hour and a half a day over a period of
several weeks to that student can visit their location and actually shadow that
experience. It is beneficial for the
student because it is a visual as opposed being learned from a book. For the corporate sponsor, it is very
positive because they get to work with our students and to see a real positive
side of our students not only with what they have learned, but what their
career choices are going to be.
The program can either be a semester or a full year
and will involve either the first two or last two periods of the day and
students must provide their own transportation.
This is a learning process therefore students will receive academic
credit but no financial remuneration.
The councilors are anticipating not more than 40 applicants at one time
which will mean keeping track of all 40 making sure they have learned so there
will be more to it than just showing up at the internship.
Bill Massolio also addressed student scheduling. Arena scheduling created the master schedule and incorporated all the best River High School has to offer. The students meet with their guidance counselor and can look at what they have taken and what is needed to meet graduation requirements. The schedule is very sensitive to student demand and there are a lot more choices. All data goes to the data entry clerk and the schedule is then printed. The schedules may be changed as many times as the student wishes prior to the end of the school year, but will not be changed after school begins in August. The goal is for every student to have their schedule before the end of the school year and on the first day of school, first period all students are in class doing what they are suppose to be doing, not waiting in line for schedule changes. IB student’s scheduling will be handled separately but similar.

Advisory Council – Meeting Minutes

This program is sponsored by Ed Options, and offers
20 high school courses on line. They
generously offered their program to Riverview for $1500 for the second semester,
which is considerably lower than the normal cost which is $20,000 per
year. At this time the program was
offered mainly to seniors who were in j jeopardy of graduating. Students may take the courses on line, but
must take their tests in the presence of a teacher. This program will be discussed at the budget
meetings.
Linda Nook explained this event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and would like Riverview to participate. It’s a community event to be held 4/30/04 and is an all night walk. Teams should seek sponsors to help with fund.
There hasn’t been a committee appointed at this
time, so this will have to be put on h old until after spring break.
Linda Nook explained instead of presenting the First Among Equals awards this year, Riverview will be presenting the President’s Educational Excellence/Achievement awards.
Ø The purpose of the
Educational Excellence Award is to recognize academic success in the classroom.
Ø The Educational Achievement
Award is to recognize those students who show outstanding educational growth,
improvement, commitment or intellectual development in their academic subjects
but do not meet the criteria for the President’s award for Educational
Excellence.
Linda Nook went over changes that will be made to
our dress code for next school year.
Input was requested from students on SAC, and the biggest issue seemed
to be inconsistency with staff issuing dress code violations. Some staff members are diligent and others
look the other way. The rules next year
will be written in a more precise manner to be more readily understood by
students, parents and staff.
March 25th and April 6th will
be strictly budget meetings. The
meetings will be held in the Omni Science room from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The budget deadline is April 8th
and if not resolved on the 6th, we may have to have an additional
meeting April 8th.
The meeting adjourned at 3:30 PM.
