Chuck Evans called the meeting to order at 2:08 p.m.
The members of the council were given the opportunity to read the November 13, 2003 minutes for approval, but due to the lack of a quorum at the beginning of the meeting the minutes were tabled until the next meeting.
Janice Piedra suggested that the Renaissance Program be revised to use weighted GPAs as had been done in the past to determine what type of renaissance card the student would be eligible for. Many honor students are upset because they didn’t qualify for a gold card as a result of the new guidelines, which only uses un-weighted GPAs. A lengthy discussion took place regarding the current policy because it doesn’t take into account the degree of difficulty for the honors, AP and DE courses. It was pointed out that the degree of difficulty is the same for those students who struggle with regular classes and manage to earn A’s and B’s. The decision was made to change the GPA qualifications to: GOLD – 3.67-4.00; SILVER – 3.33-3.66; WHITE – 3:00 – 3.32.
Linda Nook feels the greatest need for the 10% of the school recognition money should be used for FCAT preparation and materials.
Transportation is a problem for those students who can’t afford to use SCAT, and it was also suggested that snacks be provided. SCAT passes can be provided and requests could be made for parents and community to donate snacks.
It was also suggested that the computer lab be expanded to add compass.
