Review Of Minutes

The minutes of the October 23, 2003 meeting were approved as written.

Booker High School Guidance Resource Program

Johnnie Bernhard gave a presentation on how the Guidance Resource Program works at Booker High School.  This program works along with Guidance, assisting students from 9th grade through 12th grade, providing information such as courses, financial assistance, scholarships, college choices and being able to talk to recruiters one on one.  However, to have the program work at its optimum it should start with incoming 9th grade students.  Without utilizing this program, many students are left behind. It’s not only good for high schools, but for the county and state as well.  Scholarships went up 55% from the previous year at Booker.   A visit to Booker High School is to be announced.

Linda would see this person as a Riverview High School resource expert and all college recruiters would go through him/her. Students would schedule times on their lunch hour and appointments should only take 5-10 minutes.  Guidance counselors would continue to explain financial aid options; this person would be a resource only.

Venice High School is sponsored by the Venice Rotary and uses a computer scholarship program similar to Fast Web.  Because of how it is funded, it is a separate entity and has a Board that leads the program.  A visit to Venice High School has been set up for 11/18/03 at 11:00 a.m.

It was agreed that Riverview is in need of a resource program.
