AS PRESENTED BY
CHARMAINE PONTLITZ
Introductions:
Carlene Judge, from the Sarasota County School Board introduced herself, and explained her capacity as facilitator in the division of the $242,099.00 A+ monies.
Introductions were made by the twelve designated group speakers: Chuck Evans, Mike Harvey, Carol Knoblick, Judy Lyon Judi Ex, Jim Duerist. Sue Hlohinec, Lisa Hlohnic, Sam Sharff, Janice Piedra, Charmaine Pontlitz, Bonnie Kuhla.
The parents made objections to the format of the meeting. It was pointed out by parents that non-sac parents and students were invited to the meeting to partake in breakout sessions, designed to allow parent and student SAC representatives to discuss possibilities and then choose a designated speaker. Parents objected to the fact that the format of the meeting had been changed and would not allow this to happen. Parents also questioned the change in decision making procedures and questioned why a vote was being forced when the SAC board had not approved this and parents expressed that they felt this was in violation of SAC by-laws.
The selected SAC members were given time to speak and outline their idea for the allocation of funds and e explain the reasons for their vote.
After this was completed the vote was equally divided with all the teachers voting for 100% to go to bonuses and the parents voting that 75% go to teacher/staff bonuses and 25% back to the school to fund educational programs and purchase educational equipment and instructional materials.
Votes were listed and everyone was asked for a compromise to their original vote.
The parents went 80% for teachers/staff bonuses and 20% to go back to the school. The teachers remained at 100% for bonuses.
Sue Hlohinec suggested that the parents and teachers meet halfway at 87.5% for teacher/staff bonuses and 12.5% to go back into the school. Parents supported it. This was declined by teachers/staff.
After a third round of discussions the parents compromised 95% to staff and 15% for school equipment and materials. The teachers remained at 100% bonuses.
After a five minute break, where teachers and parents talked amongst themselves in their separate groups another vote was taken.
Parents voted 85% staff bonuses, 5% to be held in a reimbursement fund for Teachers expenses and 10% for equipment and programs. The teachers voted 95% bonuses and 5% to go back to the school.
After each group consulted the parents were vocal about their frustration over what they considered lack of compromise and voted 80% teacher/staff bonuses, 5% reimbursement fund and 15% for the kids. The teachers came back with 90% staff bonuses, 5% reimbursement fund and 5% back to the kids.
Abby Gerrity (speaking for the parents) again presented 87.5% as a compromise. She asked Chuck Evans to calculate the difference between 87%% and 90%. Mr. Evans and Jason Mocherman did so. The difference being $40/person. Parents asked to go back to an equal split. The facilitator asked if this was possible. This was declined.
All votes were not majority votes, a two-thirds majority could not be met and the decision was made by Carlene Judge to defer to Linda Nook and it would be her decision if another meeting would be called or the money would go to default.
GROUND RULES and OPTIONS THAT WERE PRESENTED HAVE TO BE INSERTED. ALSO RICH GERRITY WAS IN ATTENDANCE.
