School Advisory Council Meeting

May 6, 2003

 

Present:  Pat Bliss, Mary Byrd, Demetrus Dawkins, Chuck Evans, Judi Ex, Abby Gerrity, Christine Glass, Mary Gorman, Lisa Hlohinec, Jason Mocherman, Becky Moyer, Linda Nook, Janice Piedra, Charmaine Pontlitz, Sam Sharff, Russell White, and Laticia Williams

Call Meeting to Order

Mr. Chuck Evans called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m.

 

Review of  Minutes March 4, 2003, March 18, 2003, April 1, 2003 and April 7, 2003 Meetings

Members were asked to review the Minutes of the above-referenced meetings.  Ms. Christine Glass questioned the statement “that Advanced Placement generates funds that could be utilized to hire a part-time secretary for ESE (Ms. Nook was given the flexibility to hire as she sees fit  in the April 7, 2003 minutes.  It was clarified “that AP funds would be used for AP teachers, thereby freeing up general funds for other positions such as a part-time secretary for the ESE Department”.  All minutes were accepted with the correction to the April 7, 2003 minutes.

 

Lottery Dollars Request for Dell Computer

Art Teacher, Jan Davis, requested a high-end Dell Computer that is capable of handling digital photo and computer graphics, along with a photo quality Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer for larger images.  The total cost for the equipment is $3,014.46 and Ms. Davis explained that she would be willing to pay half the cost with NAHS funds.  She further explained that it is her intention to integrate digital photo into her creative photo course to accommodate more students.  There was general discussion regarding prices and which brand was felt to best meet the needs of Ms. Davis and her students.

 

Members were in agreement to fund computer with printer in an amount not to exceed $4500.00.

 

Small Learning Communities

Ms. Linda Nook explained that there would be a meeting on May 8, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. to distribute more information and receive input from parents.  She continued that at this time, there approximately 150 students interested in either the Championship Academy or Creative Arts Academy.

 

Budget Update

Ms. Nook noted that advertisement for first round of positions would begin in a couple of weeks; with more vacancies in the ESE Department due to teachers’ certification and voluntary teaching in the academies.  She continued that due to the possibility of the Class Size Amendment not being funded, RHS may lose six positions.

 

Ms. Nook concluded that classroom assignments were posted, and that most classes were clustered to help keep students close to all of their classes.

Membership for 2003-2004 School Year

Ms. Becky Moyer stated that the following positions would need to be filled on SAC for the upcoming year:

 

(2) 9th grade parents

(1) 9th grade student

(2) 11th grade parents

(1) 11th grade student

 

It was noted that Ms. Janice Piedra is the current 12th grade parent, but that her second student will be a junior next year, while Ms. Piedra still has one year left to serve out her term.  Ms. Piedra has expressed interest in being on SAC next year.

 

It was mentioned that SAC needs ESOL representation.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 2:55 p.m.
