Small Learning Community Update
Ms. Linda Nook requested ideas from the members on how to invite parents/students to participate in the upcoming informational forum for the Small Learning Communities.
It was suggested that staff focus on parents with incoming students; and that a letter is prepared with a “catchy phrase” to get the reader’s attention, outlining the benefits of the program, and encouraging participation.
Ms. Janice Piedra announced that the Renaissance Gala will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at Michael’s on East at 6:30 p.m. Ms. Piedra continued that the tickets were $75.00 each ($40.00 teachers/staff) and a Silent Auction was scheduled for the evening; and that 50% of the proceeds from specific donated items would be given back to the departments/clubs which had donated the items. She also noted that the Learning Center was opened to all students Monday – Thursday, and that students interested in tutoring sessions should contact Ms. Evie Eddins, Program Director.
Mr. Evans explained that Curriculum Coordinators felt the need to revise the current requirements for the Renaissance Program.
The Renaissance Program was established in 1994 under the direction of Mr. Kevin Flynn and a small committee of staff members as a way to recognize outstanding academic achievement for students. Guidelines were established based on the GPA of students, as well as other factors such as classroom conduct.
Since the inception at RHS the Renaissance Program has seen a dramatic increase in the number of students who have made the appropriate grades to qualify for a gold, silver, or white card. However, there is a contingent of these students who have been able to qualify for a white card with straight C’s in their weighted classes (equivalent to a 3.0). The Curriculum Coordinators feel that since the purpose of the program is to recognize outstanding achievement, then adjusting to an unweighted GPA with slight modifications would be appropriate. The committee also felt that if a student were not taking any honors level classes, they should still be able to qualify for a gold card with a B in one class and A’s in all others.
Some of the other issues are as follows:
1. Attendance
2. Student Independent Study Days
3. Students serving Administrative ISR/OSS
4. Celebrations
5. Student discounts to activities
While there was general discussion regarding this matter, Mr. Evans tabled this subject until the next meeting allowing individuals to forward comments to him for discussion.
Ms. Becky Moyer gave an overview of how the school was graded for its FCAT performance during the 2001-2002 school year.
Ms. Nook shared a copy of the draft of next year’s school calendar and requested any input from members.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m.
*The next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 4, 2003
