Agenda Item/Minutes

The minutes from the November 13, 2006 meeting were reviewed and approved.

Agenda Item/Focus Groups

Dr. George presented a review of the five Focus Groups meetings that were held. The following are several items that were discussed:

• Impart the Pine View philosophy to future staff and community
• Do not lower the standards that have already been established at Pine View to meet growth expectations
• Separate grades, elementary, middle and high
• It is comforting for parents to know that their child can stay in the same school through 12^th grade
• When students change schools there tends to be a dip in academic performance for the transitions from elementary to middle and middle to high school
• Elementary, middle and high school teachers work together at Pine View to allow students to transition into the next grade with the knowledge they need to succeed
• Establish a centralized program within the gifted programs
• If there were more viable options for gifted students throughout the district, there would likely then be a positive impact on Pine View’s enrollment challenges

Mr. Largo stated that solving the problem should not undermine the success of Pine View. He then went on to propose the following question to the SAC committee - what educational/instructional benefits are there for Pine View staying a school which services grades 2-12?

The meeting was adjourned; the next School Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for February 12, 2007 at 4:15 p.m. in room #911.
