Principal’s Update/Focus Groups

The focus groups were discussed by Mr. Largo. There were 12 scheduled focus groups, 4 have

already taken place, but 7 were canceled due to lack of participation. The participants of the 4

focus groups to date consisted of 5 teachers, 7 high school students and 26 parents. Josh Levin

Council meeting.

Agenda Item/Media Presentation

Mary Alice Deveny presented results from a Media Center Task force, which was put in place to

come up with recommendations to improve the media center. The Media Task Force Committee

is made up of parents/administration/faculty and students. They have been meeting for the last 1

˝ years. The results are as follows:

  • Phase One – add security gates for elementary entrance. This entrance would be
  • located at the rear of the media center.
  • Phase Two – Begin fundraising for new books.
  • Phase Three – Add full-time aide.
  • Phase Four – Expand front of building.
  • Phase Five – The task committee will investigate opportunities for on-line coursework,
  • and the feasibility of adding a second story to the existing media center

Discussions that followed regarding the presentation included:

  • This summer the media center will go through a “weeding” of books that are no longer up
  • to date or are in poor condition.
  • One idea for raising money would be that parents would be able to go on-line and target
  • specific books which they could purchase and donate to the media center. These
  • donated books would have a gift plate.
  • For the last 13 years the Media Center has not received any new furniture, etc.
  • Some discussion about a more efficient utilization of current space (e.g. TV production
  • studio, professional library, etc.)
  • The next Media Center Task Force committee meeting is scheduled for November 28th.

The meeting was adjourned; the next School Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for

December 11, 2006 at 4:15 p.m. in room #911.
