MINUTES
FEBRUARY 13, 2006

Dr.
Graser welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order.
Agenda Item/Minutes
The minutes from the January 9, 2006
meeting were reviewed and approved.
Agenda Item/Referendum Update
Special guest Robin Froug, from the
Citizens for Better Schools (CBS) was introduced. Robin and Melissa deLisser reported the
following:
- The
campaign has been officially kicked off by CBS and they need people to
wave banners also write letters to the editor.
- Need a
strong showing for early voting.
- There
will be performing arts students performing at some of the venues for
early voting.
- Early
voting dates – February 27th – March 12th
- Actual
date of referendum will be March 14th
- Registration
for our senior class was very successful with about 1/2 our seniors being
registered.
- Help is
needed with writing letters to the editors from staff and students and
should be sent to Robin Froug who will then distribute to the papers.
- If you
require help writing the letters you can contact the Landings and speak
with Sheila Weiss who has a list of talking points available.
- At the
referendum meeting, which was sponsored by the Pine View Association, held
at Pine View on January 25, 2006, there were approximately 40 – 50
families. Many questions were asked
about the extended school day. Consensus
was that the families left with their questions being answered.
Mr. Largo reported the following:
- At SDMT
meeting, five different bell schedules were proposed to include the
additional 30 minutes to our day.
- Start
time at 9:15 a.m. until 3:50 – 3:52 end time.
- 00 period
would start at 7:21 – 7:25 a.m. and the day would end at 4th or
5th period.
- Additional
time to 1st period due to announcements
- Time will
be added to the day, no possibility of extending the school year, as it is
very expensive.
AGENDA
ITEM/YOUTH RISK SURVEY
- The Youth
Risk Survey is given every other year to grades 9 and 11.
- Only 92
participants were chosen out of the 286 students that took the survey due
to a process that eliminates surveys that may be inaccurate.
- Areas of
concern were, suicide, fighting, alcohol, drugs and bullying.
- Focus
groups will be held with high school students to discuss if these points
are accurate.
- Used to
help guidance plan forums and activities.
- These
surveys were shown to teachers and then teachers will help with the focus
groups.
- The
student representatives from SAC were invited to join in these focus
groups.
AGENDA ITEM/MEDIA TASK COMMITTEE/SURVEY
- Media
Center will be holding an open house in the Professional Library on
February 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- On the
next Professional Day, March 13th, the Media Center is
presenting a class on the premier online reference source - World Book
Online. A representative from World
Book will come to Pine View and hold a training course. This is open to Pine View Faculty and
District Middle School Teachers.
- A survey
has been sent out to our teachers to help the Media Center focus on what
the needs are for our teachers and students. The survey is due back on Tuesday,
February 14th.
- Wikipedia
was discussed – this is a free on-line resource site that helps student’s
research but may not be accurate as users are able to enter their own
data. Although experts do peruse
the sight and eliminate inaccurate data.
- Looking
into ways to upgrade the media center.
Do we buy books or on-line materials or a combination of both?
