McIntosh Middle School          School Advisory Council Minutes    August 16, 2005

 

  1. Welcome
    1. Open House Dates were announced as Thursday Aug 25th for 6th grade and multi-level, and Tuesday, August 30th for grades 7 and 8. Time is 6:30pm
  2. Membership
    1. Chairmanship – requests for interested parties to self-nominate. No one interested. Mary Gorman re-elected by consensus of the members.
    2. New members needed – membership solicitation flyer to be sent home within the next week via agenda book.
    3. SAC secretary – it was requested that the chairman not act as secretary/record keeper by the chair. Election of said secretary should occur at our next meeting.
  3. Operational Guidelines were distributed and members asked to review contents for the next meeting.
  4. Q & A Time: It was decided that each SAC meeting should begin with the opportunity for members to bring up areas of concern, or questions they might have.
    1. Request was made for departmental presentations to be given for SAC members so they might be more informed, and thus provide information to their constituents about positive things that are happening at MMS. Curriculum Coordinators would be organizing this event. Individual teams may also wish to participate.
    2. Orientation: overall opinion of parents was that it went smoothly.
    3. Possible Topics for upcoming PTO meeting include:

                                                               i.      Parents don’t know how to help their students with absences, tests, homework, (when should we do it?).

                                                             ii.      School wide process for when a student should find out what homework they missed – research class time.

                                                            iii.      Supply lists

                                                           iv.      School Choice – how did we do with recruiting students to MMS?

    1. Block schedule – how are students reacting? Parents thought their students were adjusting to the A/B and block schedule well.

  2. Achievement Gap 101: reviewed relevant documents. Focus for 2005 is 1) “Cut-Point Kids”, 2) Mentor / Mentee Program, and 3) Family Advocacy
  3. Folder for 2005 / 06 was distributed, and included
