School Advisory Council Minutes        Sept 4th, 2002 8 am – 9:15am

1.       Membership introductions – we welcomed our new assistant principal, Mr. Dan Cronin, and new mathematics curriculum  coordinator, Mrs. Barbara  Maechtle. Additional parent representatives will be elected during our next PTO meeting, set for September 16th at 7 pm in the Exploratorium.

2.       Financial Forecast - Mr. Hagemann addressed the financial forecast for this school year. Currently  we are 140 students below district projection, resulting  in  a loss of resources of approx. $250K. Closing of Careers and Family and Consumer Science programs, along with reserves has covered the shortfall.

3.       Design Team Outlook – renovation in progress, with a forecast completion date of Fall 2004. Currently the project is $1 million  over budget. Landscaping and glazing are being cut to preserve interior improvements and programs.

4.       Wingspan Initiative – Mary Taylor addressed this program where staff look at the re-construction of daily processes, and how we service students.  One topic for this year will address why the student population is decreasing, and Data Coaching. Changes resulting from last year’s Wingspan initiative include a new discipline plan, departmentalizing eighth grade math to better meet the needs of students, and implementation of Data Coaching.

5.       Technology Initiatives – Mary Gorman reported on the purchase of a new wireless portable computer lab, and indicated that the wireless environment would become increasingly useful during the construction process. Teachers will require training before using the new operating system.

6.       Florida School Recognition funds – discussion included thoughts from yesterday’s SDMT meeting, presented by Al Graham, SDMT Chair.  SAC recommends that a joint SDMT / SAC subcommittee be formed, through election, to facilitate creation of a process to determine use of A+ funds. Mr. Cronin has offered his assistance to facilitate this subcommittee, as an impartial individual.  This process could then be used again in the future, since beginning next year; there will be deadlines for these funds.

7.       Adequate Progress – Mr. Hagemann will be working  on our Report of Adequate Progress, and will hold a SAC workshop on Monday, Sept 9th from 9 am to 10 am in room 405. The report is due to the district  by September 16th.
