New Business:

Mrs. Glass, a community citizen along with several other citizens of North Port, presented concerns to SAC committee regarding the Community of Caring video shown during a Community of Caring class at HCMS.  Their opinions were that the video was negative and offensive.  Discussion ensued regarding the contributions to character development the Community of Caring program provides.  Mrs. Glass requested materials for the Community of Caring curriculum for the remainder of the school year.

She also spoke of concerns regarding the form signed by students acknowledging receipt of harassment training.  Mr. Watson explained the purpose of the video was to address “tolerance of different ethnic/racial groups”.  He suggested that all guests view the video and form their own opinions.

Mark Freeman, 8th grade Social Studies teacher, requested funds for registration to attend the Florida Holocaust Museum Human Rights and Genocide Institute summer program.

Motion approved for $200 to cover registration fees.

The Stepping Forth ceremony for 8th graders in May will be discussed at future SAC meetings.

Motion approved to adjourn at 8:45 a.m.
