SAC Meeting 5/6/04 – Heron Creek Middle School

 

Attendance:  Ted Watson, Eric Idoyaga, Sarah Terhune, Brenda Kelly, Deb Earley, Scott Wilson, Lois Mancuso

 

OLD BUSINESS:

 

Minutes from last meeting were reviewed and approved.  The current budget for SAC is $5,000.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

It was noted that HCMS will currently be hiring 20 teachers for the next school year (rather than 12 that was noted at previous meeting)

 

The committee sponsoring the 8th grade dance requested $500 to help cover costs for DJ and decorations.  Motion approved.

 

Dena Henderson, drama teacher, requested to have a dance sponsored by Thespians in October.  Discussion regarding a cap for cost for dance ticket resulted in motion to approve a cap of $2.00 for dance admission to any dances at HCMS.  Motion approved for Thespian Dance in October.

 

PTO reported that the golf tournament June 5th is moving along and they are getting businesses to sponsor holes. PTO elections for next year will be held in media center on May 18 at 6:30.  PTO was also thanked for their luncheon provided to all teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.

 

The Leadership Committee reported that their trip to Tallahassee was a huge success.

26 students attended  and got to visit the Supreme Court Building, Planetarium, Challenger Learning Center, the Capitol Building, the Senate and Museum of History.

 

Mr. Wilson discussed the purpose and application of Community of Caring at Heron Creek Middle School and motion was approved to accept the Diversity Statement that will be posted in each classroom on campus.

 

The non-salary Discretionary Budget report was reviewed and approved.

 

Heron Creek Middle School is the only school in Sarasota County that either improved or remained the same for every test (NRT math and reading) at every grade level (6-8).

Discussion ensued of how to distribute funds received if HCMS is graded as an “A” school.  A SAC meeting was scheduled for July 15 at 9:00 a.m. to review and develop a staff survey for this purpose.
