            Clarification of meeting time reviewed.  Start time to be 2:45 pm.

*  Ms. Kitto discussed Reading Block Program

            Positive aspects:  all children reading at same time

                        Reading, ESOL and Resource teachers included in process

                        Greater focus towards time spent with all students

                        Children moved into smaller groups, minimizing disparities in reading levels

            Concerns noted:  Integration of Kdg and 1st grade into block program

                        Identification and processing of at risk students

Afternoon reading block not conducive for student reading

            Mid-Year Changes made:  Shortened reading block to include Kdg and 1st grade students

Moved grade 2 students to a.m. block to accommodate better reading time for younger students

            Possible Changes/Solutions

                        Reconfigure Reading/Writing Teachers

                        ESOL – Re-evaluate staffing ratios

                        Consider regrouping for reading and/or math

                        Convene Ad Hoc committee to investigate options

*  Projected Budget discussed

            Enrollment numbers have increased enough that Gulf Gate Elementary is not open to

School choice for 2003-04 school year.

            Possibility of “status quo” budget for 2003-04 year due to weaning process from grant and

 increased student numbers.

*  Items for future discussion

            Possibility of greater accommodations in classroom for ESE students

            Possibility of grant to be written for student mentoring program/after-school tutoring

program
