The Gocio Elementary School Advisory Council (SAC) convened on November 15, 2005, at 3:15 p.m.  Duke Woolverton welcomed the members.  Twenty-two members were in attendance, including Tracey Bailey, Judie Bouldry, Pam Davis, Mary Douglas, Steve Dragon, Tamara Ellis, Millie Galan-Aguirre, Kirsten Hazelton, Rob Kanotz, Carol LaMontagne, Tracy Purvis, Tim Rowan, Margie Silver, Carolyn Spangler, Darlene Smith, Diana Stoker, Maureen Taliento, Rod Taliento, Debra Voege, Aaron Watkins, Tymesha Williams, and Duke Woolverton.  Mary Rozelle was also in attendance.

The first order of business was the reading of the minutes.  Aaron Watkins moved that the minutes be approved.  Judie Bouldry seconded. Motion approved.

Debra Voege, Data Coach, presented an overview of the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), a norm-referenced computer interactive reading comprehension test that is given to students in our district in grades 2-12. The test is administered to Gocio students three times a year to assess student-reading levels, monitor reading progress, and determine needs to guide academic instruction.  Students select areas of reading interest, spend approximately 20 minutes taking the test, and then receive a personalized reading list based on interests and measured reading level.  The personalized reading lists are printed twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring.  The SRI uses a common metric lexile measure (number score from 0-1700) to evaluate both reading ability and text difficulty.  By placing both reader and text on the same scale, teachers and parents are able to predict a student’s comprehension with a particular text and determine academic needs based on the student’s ability to comprehend the reading material.  Parents can determine lexile levels of texts students check out at the media center and other libraries by visiting www.lexile.com. SAC members were given an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the program.

Tymesha Williams moved that the meeting adjourn.  Diana Stoker seconded. Meeting adjourned.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 17, 2006 at 3:15 p.m.
